  2. Why Science?

  3. What is Geology ?

  4. Geology is the science that studies: • Earth materials • Earth’s history • Earth’s processes

  5. SocialStudies Natural Science Geography Anthropology Sociology Geology

  6. What Do Geologists Do ? Where Do Geologists Work ?

  7. Sub-disciplines of Geology • Mineralogy: • Petrology: • Structural Geology: • Sedimentology: • Paleontology: • Geochemistry: • Geophysics: • Seismology: • Geomorphology: • Economic Geology: • Petroleum Geology:

  8. Mineralogy Minerals and materials used in antacids include: Aluminum (aluminum hydroxide) Bismuth (bismuth subsalicylate) Crushed stone (calcium carbonate) Magnesium (magnesium hydroxide, magnesium trisilicate)

  9. Minerals and materials used in fireworks include: Aluminum (metal powder - bright flashes and loud bangs) Antimony (glittering effect) Barite (barium salts - bright greens, barium oxide - white) Calcium (calcium salts, chloride, and sulfate - orange) Copper (copper carbonate - blues) Iron (iron with carbon - golds) Lithium (lithium salts and carbonate - red) Magnesium (metal powder or flake - silvers) Salt (sodium compounds - yellow colors) Strontium (strontium salts and carbonate - reds) Titanium (metal powder - silvers) Zinc (smoke and clouds) Zirconium (metal powder - silvers)

  10. Minerals and materials used in cosmetics include: Barite (barium lake) Aluminum (alumina) Bentonite Bismuth (bismuth oxychloride) Boron (boron nitride) Calcium (calcium carbonate/calcium lake) Chromium (e.g. chromium oxide, chromium hydroxide) Iron oxide pigment Kaolin Magnesium (e.g. magnesium carbonate, magnesium stearate) Manganese (e.g. manganese oxide) Mica Salt Talc Tin (e.g. tin oxide) Titanium (titanium dioxide) Zinc (e.g. zinc oxide, zinc stearate)

  14. Geochemistry

  15. Hydrogeology

  16. La Conchita, CA: January 10, 2005, the hill behind this small community failed killing 10 residents and destroyed 18 homes. Hazard Assessment

  17. In 1995 the hill behind La Conchita failed and buried 9 homes but no lives were lost. Ventura County immediately declared the whole community a Geological Hazard Area.
