  1. 45th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference April 19-22, 2004 Structures TC Session Status Fall TC Meeting Report Steve Engelstad Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Marietta, GA

  2. Summary • Conference Overview • Structures Review Statistics • Special Sessions • Technical Sessions

  3. Conference Overview

  4. Chairs

  5. Conference Overview • Theme • Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials – From Conception to Application • Speakers • Industry, Government, Academia, International?

  6. Conference Overview • 45th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference • 12th AIAA/ASME/AHS Adaptive Structures Conference (Greg Agnes and Lee Peterson ) • There will be two Forums • Non-Deterministic Approaches (Chris Chamis & Levon Minnetyan) • Gossamer Spacecraft (Eric Flint & Rich Pappa) • TC’s are responsible for: • Review of all papers in their area • Preliminary Layout of Sessions • List of names/address/email/phone for Session Chairs & Co-Chairs • Prioritization of each Session (give each session a different priority number) • Indicate Plenary Sessions and Student Papers

  7. Abstract Review Procedures & Dates(Includes SDM, ASC, DSM and Forums) • Abstract reviews will be handled electronically like last year • Abstracts – published due date is 1 Aug 03 • All abstracts get three independent reviews • Invited vs. encouraged papers – what’s the difference? • The only truly invited papers are the Keynote addresses and the SDM Lecture • All other papers will go through the standard review process • Swapping abstracts with other TC’s or Forums as appropriate is encouraged (inform the Technical Chair!)

  8. Program Schedule

  9. Program Schedule

  10. Preliminary Session Layout

  11. Latest Planning Schedule • September 12: Abstract reviews completed • September 26: Session planning completed!!! (SDM Planning Meeting in Palm Springs on this day) • October 10: Session chairs & co-chairs assigned • October 24: Program completed!!!

  12. Structures Review Statistics

  13. Structures Area Abstracts – SDM 45 • Abstracts Processed • 150 Total Structures Abstracts Submitted • 0 Accepted (too early to accept/reject) • 0 Rejected (too early to accept/reject) • 34 Returned for Revision • 449 Reviews Assigned • 162 Completed Reviews • 37% Total Reviews Completed • 6 Student Abstracts Placed In Structures Sessions • 5 Special Sessions in Structures Program

  14. Review Process • Review Team • 36 TC Member Reviewers – Average 5 abstracts (will increase) • 33 Friends of TC Reviewers – Average 5 abstracts • 33 Volunteer Reviewers – Average 3 abstracts • 1st Abstract Deadline 8/1/03 - around 90 abstracts submitted • 2nd Abstract Deadline 8/15/03 – Shot up to 150 abstracts • Conducted initial screening and sent 34 abstracts back for revision • 19 were revised • 15 were not revised; (will be rejected) • If reject 5 more, would give an acceptance rate of 87% • 430 Now under review • We are short on reviewers, as I expect some reviewers not to perform; expect to assign these to other reviewers

  15. Special Sessions

  16. Special Session on Aircraft Structures Certification • Organized and Chaired by Steve Engelstad and Ben Thacker • 5 papers followed by a panel discussion • A Hybrid Probabilistic Method for Composite Aircraft Design • Evolution of Structures Design Philosophy and Criteria • Probabilistic Damage Tolerance Methodology for Reliability Design and Inspection Optimization • A Functional Methodology for Assessing Post-Initation Damage in Composite Structures and Bonded Joints • An Alternate Certification Approach for Composite Structures

  25. End of Presentation

  26. Alternate Abstract Review Process Based on Materials TC Approach • Distribute Submitted Abstracts to Small TC Review Team • Assess Technical Credibility • Identify Clearly Deficient Abstracts • Return Deficient Abstracts for Revision With Due Date • Accept Abstracts That Pass Initial Review • Reject Deficient Abstracts If Not Revised • Reject Deficient Abstracts Not Revised Satisfactorily NOTE • This Approach Is Fair • Allows for Revisions to Occur • Ensures That Authors Who Make An Honest Effort Get Chance to Present • This Approach Is More Consistent With the High Acceptance Rates for Abstracts
