  3. What is Holding Out HELP? To assist those from a polygamous background with the resources necessary to meet their physical, emotional, and educational needs. Help those transitioning from a polygamist community into an independent and self-sufficient life. Provide access to housing, food, clothing, counseling, mentoring, job training, education and referral services.

  4. There are 30,000 Polygamist in Utah. %90 of those served by Holding Out HELP have experienced physical, sexual, and religious abuse.

  5. 100% supported by private individuals and small businesses. Two annual fundraisers.   Currently serve over 250 people a year.

  8. “It is hard to know you want to leave something when the place you want, no need, to leave to seems just as oppressive” • Electrik Children “When going out to the grocery store or something, which isn’t very often, it is the strangest thing feeling superior and inferior at the same time. People look at you like you are some kind of freak. You have to remind yourself that you are the righteous one.”

  10. “You can’t imagine the fear of leaving everything and everyone behind. You think for sure you are going to hell.” “It’s like being born again, everything is strange. You don’t know how to be a normal person.”

  11. Things I have learned: • Equality- We still have a long way to go. • Just because someone looks a certain way doesn’t mean they choose to. • I have a lot to be thankful for. • Pizza is a privilege. • The small things make the greatest difference.

  12. “I used to love my life when I was younger. Things seemed so perfect. Then something happened, and one day you just can’t take it anymore.” Brave It is the hardest decision, and it doesn’t feel Constantly told how to live, no choice is really your own. Though now I see I am.”

  13. Ways to help • $30 a month can provide food for a mentor to meet weekly, set goals, learn life skills and have a listening ear. • $50 a month can keep a phone on for a month while a client searches for employment. • Bulk foods •  Paper Products / Hygiene Items (Not covered by food stamps)

  14. “We don’t need people to be sorry, we need people to care, to help, to see us as people.” -Jane “I am not the only one with a story or from a background of oppression, I see it all around. But no one says a word, nothing is ever done.”
