Introduction To Biofuel • Biofuels are fuels that have been developed from other materials such as plant matter and animal waste matter. • Derived from biological carbon fixation • Reduced carbon footprint and renewable • Important for domestic energy security, Australia currently imports half of its liquid fuel needs and needs its own source of energy supplies • Biofuels have been used to replace carbon-based fossil fuels due the effect of pollution to the atmosphere and global warming

  3. Introduction To Biogas • ‘swamp gas’ or ‘marsh gas’ • Produced when animal waste or other organic material rots in the absence of oxygen • Can be produced on a large scale

  4. Properties • Combustible fuel • Contains up to 80% methane • Mainly consists of CH4,CO2 and H2S

  5. How it is made • Animal waste or other organic material rots in the absence oxygen • Mostly commonly produced via livestock manure • Also can be made from biogas digester

  6. Impacts • Biogas production can reduce the pollution potential in waste water by converting oxygen demanding organic matter that could cause low oxygen levels in the surface waters • It has the advantage over wood because it uses less labour to attain the wood and minimises deforestation

  7. Usage • Can be used as an energy source; generating electricity ,light, heat motion and fuel • Can be used directly for cooking heating lighting absorption refrigeration • Compressed biogas can be used as fuel for vehicles
