  2. GENERAL FACTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS • Obesity is having an unhealthy amount of body fat. • Factors that contribute to being overweight include overeating, genetic makeup, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active.

  3. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS • Adults with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or above are considered obese. • Being obese puts you at risk for developing many diseases such as type two diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and some cancers.

  4. On average, 822 people a day and 300,000 people a year die from obesity.

  5. Effects of obesity on individuals • Being overweight can affect your mood. Being overweight can make you feel depressed. Eating foods that are high in fat and not getting proper exercise can make you feel tired all the time.

  6. Stats. • Among adolescents aged 12–19, obesity increased from 5.0% to 18.1% from 1980 to 2008. • Blacks had 51 percent higher prevalence of obesity, and Hispanics had 21 percent higher obesity prevalence compared with whites. • In 2008 in the U.S., about one-third of adults in the U.S. were considered obese.

What we learned • If you are obese, losing 5-10 percent of your body fat can delay or prevent developing many diseases. • Obese children and adolescents are more likely to have risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type two diabetes than are other adolescents • Results from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights, indicate that an estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years are obese.
