  2. Aryans • Formed in the Indus River Valley • Formed by three rivers: Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra • Warriors who were distantly related to the Persians who conquer the Kush and civilize India • Develop a complex social system with 4 social classes or Varnas

  3. Top: Priests/Brahmans 2nd: Warriors/Kshatriyas 3rd: Merchants, artisans, farmers/Vaisyas 4th: Unskilled and servants/Sudras Untouchables: Clean animals etc.. The unclean Further divided by occupation (Jati) Rules for marriage, diet, and customs DID NOT MIX Pass down traditions orally forms Vedas Religious text contains Mahabharta and Bhagavad-Gita Gita Aryan Social Class

Hinduism • Not founded by a single person • Based on the Vedas and Indian Principles • Upnishads - Religious writings that state all life is sacred • Brahma - Eternal Soul • Karma • Reincarnation- means to renter the flesh. Hindus believe that the soul is immortal and keeps reentering the body to learn life lessons • Mukti - still in existence but no longer pulled back in a physical body

Hinduism • Most ancient religion in the world • Only religion in the world which does not encourage conversion • Believe that God is everything and everywhere - he is in daily life • Hinduism is often described as a way of life because it doesn’t separate religion from life • Yoga - practice of meditation and self-discipline

  6. Hinduism Gods • Brahma - The Creator • Vishnu - The Preserver • Shiva - The Destroyer • Ganesh - God of existing beings • 1000s of Gods

Buddhism • Siddhartha Guatama (Enlightened One) founds the “religion” • Born the Son of a King • A sage predicted that Siddhartha would either become a great king or if he went out into the world would become a Buddha • King believed if he was exposed to any misery he would leave and seek out the truth • The king ordered his subjects to shield Siddhatha from any suffering

Buddhism Cont. • Siddhatha marries his cousin Yashodara (as his primary wife - he may have had more) • Leaves the palace and sees death and misery and he determines that happiness was an illusion • After the birth of his 1st son Siddhartha leaves the palace on a quest seeking truth • After rejecting evil he felt he could escape the cycle of rebirth and had discovered the 4 noble Truths and henceforth was the Buddha

Buddhism Cont. • Teachings passed orally until in 80 BC scribes compiled the teachings on paper called the Pali Canon or Tripitaka - Contained rules and ethics • 4-Noble Truths • All People Suffer and know sorrow • People suffer because their desires bind them to the cycle of rebirth • End suffering by eliminating desires • Follow the 8-fold path

Eightfold Path Know Truth Resist Evil Say nothing to hurt others Respect life Work for the good of others Free your mind of evil Control your thought Practice Meditation Nirvana is reached when you have eliminated desires Nirvana means you are finished, you cease to exist, you have broken the cycle of rebirth Buddhism Cont.

  11. Confucianism • Created by Kongfuzi - Shanding Province government official • Everyone has a role - accept it! • No book, just a collection of sayings called the Analects • Live according to Ethics • More of a philosophy than religion

  12. Daoism • Laozi - Old Master • Reject social structures and turn to nature • Yin and Yang 2 opposite forces present in all of nature • Yin - cool, dark, female • Yang - Warm, light, male • Preach balance
