Mr. Chuck Sullivan, the Poet-in-Residence at Glenn High School, recently conducted an engaging five-day poetry workshop for six ninth-grade English classes. Collaborating with dedicated teachers, including Mrs. Mary Naber and Amber Nance, approximately 150 students explored the transformative power of poetry. Through innovative exercises, they learned to connect the abstract with the concrete, enhancing their writing skills while taking personal risks. The workshop culminated in creating anthologies and sharing their poetic voices, leaving students and teachers inspired to continue their creative journeys.

Mr. Chuck Sullivan completed a five-day poetry workshop with six ninth-grade English classes. He worked with Mrs. Mary Naber, English teacher; Amber Nance, EC teacher; Mrs. Cheryl Jeffries, English teacher; Tim Parsons, student teacher. Approximately 150 students participated in the experience. Twelve teachers participated in either the actual teaching throughout the experience or the after-school workshop.
Goals of the project Students learn to connect the abstract to the concrete. Students learn how to use language in original ways by extending similes and metaphors. Students take risks and make a personal investment in their writing. Students read aloud and share their poetry. Teachers learn strategies for teaching poetry. Teachers learn how to help students connect poetry to their personal experiences. Teachers connect personally with their students.
