  3. Spoken word is defined as an artistic performance where the lyrics, poetry or stories are spoken (rather than sung, etc.) Style Growing up, was heavily influenced by rap and hip-hop culture. He didn’t agree with changing ideologies; began using “spoken word” poetry (also known as “slam” poetry) as medium to convey his work. His religion often plays into his poetry. Spoken Word The style is very much like rap, though the lack of music allows the writer more freedom. The themes present in spoken word poetry also differ from rap. Often used as form of expression for social commentary.

  4. Influences & themes Unique experiences (immigrant, religion,) greatly influence what he writes on Different take on current events Themes often include love, relationships, anti-materialism, racism and inequality and how these topics relate to his religion
