  3. Definition: The word listen means to give attention to someone or something in order to hear them.( Oxford Advance Learners’ Dictionary). ENGLISH FOR PALESTINE contains a lot of listening materials including: lessons, dialogue, exercises, songs, etc…

  4. Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying. This involves understanding a speaker's accent or pronunciation, his grammar and his vocabulary, and grasping his meaning. The importance of Listening: listening is an important receptive skill. That is, one of the important ways of receiving information is through listening

  5. The sub-skills that can be emphasized in listening exercises include: • Predicting what people are going to talk about. • Guessing at unknown words or phrases without panic. • Using one's own knowledge of the subject to help one understand. • Identifying relevant points; rejecting irrelevant information.

  6. The Stages of Listening Process 1-HEARINGoccurs when sound waves strike the ear. 2-ATTENTIONinvolves filtering out some messages and focusing on others. 3-UNDERSTANDINGrefers to making sense of a message by assigning meaning to it 4-REMEMBERINGis the process of recalling information from memory. 5-Evaluatingit is a stage in which active listeners participate. 6-RESPONDINGconsists of providing feedback to the speaker.

  7. Three stages in teaching listening • 1- Pre-listening Activities: before listening. • 2- During Listening Activities. • 3- Post-listening Activities: after listening.

  8. 1- Pre-listening questions The importance of pre-listening materials: 1- Pre-listening activities change the role of listeners from passive “recorders” to active participants . 2- Pre-listening activities increase the input. 3- Adopt a positive attitude. 4- Shut out distractions.   14. Pedagogical benefits of no pre-listening: To give learners the chance to hear English spoken by native and to speak English themselves. B. They practice being fluent and accurate English speakers.

  15. 2-Interesting and motivating listening materials: There are listening material students are interested in more than others. Some lessons teach learners how to use language they learn through listening materials so they will be interested. For instance, in grade 4 unit 3 page 18:

  17. Students hear someone askes about his T-Shirt. In grade 7 unit 5 page 22. It is about birds of Palestine. Of course, learners would be enjoyed to know much about their country and environment. Also they would be happy to know how to speak about birds in their country.

  19. 3-Listening materials too difficult for learners. In English for Palestine, there are some difficult lessons that are not easy to be learned. For example, in grade 3 unit 4 page 22, the lesson is about animals. Some of these animals are unfamiliar to this stage students. So it’s difficult to learn.

  21. In grade 5 unit 18 page 74, the lesson is all about the future of humans. It talks about the space. * Students of this age don’t know what plants or space ships mean.

  25. 4-The length of listening materials: In the first stage, the listening material could be taught will in 45 minutes. In the second and third stage there are some lesson long to be taught well in 45 minutes. Teachers should divide these lessons into smaller parts. Consider the following two examples:

  28. 5-Listen and Read: Listen and Read is an activity that enable students to do both activities. It is a technique where students can listen to people talking about different topics and where at the same time they can read what they are listening to. The conversations are not fast which allows students to understand better what the people are talking about.

  45. 8-Listening activities accompanied by pictures: A lot of listening activities are accompanied by pictures. Sometimes it is mandatory to have them. Some exercises depend on them. For example, in grade 1 unit 2 page 10. matching pictures.

  49. 9-Variation of questions in the three stages: According to the differences of age between the three stages learners, the listening questions also differ.
