Heartmap Activity What’s on your heart? What are the places, people, events that mean the most to you?
Take a look at your pencil (or pen) • Inside this pencil crouch words • That have never been written, • Never been spoken, • Never been thought. • They’re hiding… • They’re awake in there, dark in the dark • Hearing us.
In First Box: • What does this poem make you think of? • What do you think it means? • Why would we use it to begin our year together as a writing community?
In Second Box: • Respond to poem in picture: Draw the picture that came into your head as you read poem.
In Third Box: • Think about all of the different things you could write about this year. Make a list of at least ten different things (e.g. sports, family, holidays)
In Fourth Box: • Now, beside each item on your list above get specific. • For example: Sports baseball or the football game against West
Think about • What shape could you use to symbolize you? • Why is this a good shape for you?
On the Back • Draw this shape and inside it write at least ten specifics about which you could write. • Feel free to write many more • Use the shape as a way to group/organize your ideas
When you’re done with the draft: • The back of your paper was your draft. Now, choose the colors and designs of construction paper to make a final copy of your shape. You’ll use this during the year to find writing ideas. Be as creative as possible!
