Advanced Career Writing

ENG 3771 is a capstone course that focuses on advanced career writing skills essential for the professional workplace. Students will learn to create a comprehensive portfolio including a resume, cover letter, business proposals, and meeting minutes utilizing "The Writing Process"TM. A unique component involves developing a personal brand and a project through research on funding opportunities, culminating in an ePortfolio presentation. This course aims to enhance writing skills while encouraging students to explore their professional interests and establish a personal brand in the business environment.

One of Two Capstone English Writing Courses Expected Course Deliverables (per course outcomes): • Resume & cover letter • Memos • Formal business letters • Proposals and short reports • “Meeting Minutes” (for real) Current Version: Students practice writing texts common in the professional workplace using “The Writing Process”TM.

Sample Assignment:Bringing An Idea To Fruition • ENG 3771 students will spend the first part of the semester building a “personal brand” including letterhead, business cards, and an OpenLab blog related to one of their professional interests. Over the remainder of the semester, students will develop a project capable of bringing funding or recognition in support of their interests. • Develop a concept “on paper” (i.e. paper prototyping) through several iterations (e.g. ZaneStyles going mobile). • Research and explore crowdfunding, granting, revenue-based, and self-funded opportunities to develop this concept and the interest behind it. • Students create the documentation, text, and graphics needed to initiate a small campaign in support of their idea. • Students will present an ePortfolio of their collected work (Kickstarter campaign optional) as a final project with a self-evaluative reflective analysis.
