  2. 2 WhatisLandcare? Landcare is a community participation model based on voluntary groups of farmers and other committed people working together at a local level to address local issues. (…)they usually centre on developing, sharing and implementing more sustainable ways of managing land and water resources, conserving biodiversity and creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.   3. 3 The German Association for Landcare (DVL) foundet in 1993 is the umbrella organisation for all regional Landcare Associations (LCAs) or similar organisations in Germany. • 155 LCAs at the moment • we provide support and policy guidance to the network of LCAs • we regularly inform and influence decision-makers at all levels German AssociationforLandcare

  4. 4 WhatareLandcareAssociations? • Societies, founded by farmers, environmentalists and representatives of local municipalities; usually not-for-profit organisations serving the public interest; independent units • firstcharacteristic: parity Boards: equal numbers of environmentalists, farmers and local politicians • second characteristic:voluntary participation on request, they offer advice to municipal administrations, to farmers and other private landowners

  5. 5 • Three main goals: • to preserve our cultural landscape and natural habitats • to encouragelandscape management in conjunction with farmersand offer them a reliablesecond incomefrom agri-environment schemes • to support rural development and regional products Goals ofLandcareAssociations

  6. 6 Howarethesegoalsachieved? • LCAs act as advisers and mediatorson private and community land • LCAs plan measures to improve the ecological value of man-made landscapes • LCAs open up financial resources (e.g. European or federal funds) and co-ordinate the implementation

  10. 10 Lessons learnt Funding mechanisms are crucial for nature conservations measures (enough money plus the willingness to invest in conservation) Professional Landcare Facilitators are needed to initiate processes and to support with funding mechanisms Good collaboration with local authorities is fundamental Voluntariness is important to be attractive for land users Good cooperation between conservationists, farmers and communities is a model that works
