  1. OSC NetworkingEngineering Update OSTEER June 13, 2007 Paul Schopis Associate Director OSC Networking

  2. Backbone Update • Ring 4 IRUs signed • Capital Review completed 8/06/07 • Gear is being processed • 10 Gbps upgrade to parts of Rings 1, 2 and 0.

  3. Backbone Update • Looking two options for fall • Using I2 commodity peering service; so far have seen ~600Mbps • Will increase capacity with upgrades and when M120 goes in • M120s POs have been cut • Looking at Level3 using a 10 GigE pipe. Can buy as a burstable service, I.e. would really add a lot of “insurance” in uncertain times

  4. Backbone Update • Time Warner Telecom - 625 Mbps • Considering changing commodity service from 4 OC-12, and 2 GigE to two 10 Gbps connections from different providers

  5. Partners • Still bringing K-12 ITC sites on TFN • All are connected • Installing of 6509s complete

  6. New Directions • Merit interconnect update - Buckeye anticipates 30 days for interconnect • Level3 and Buckeye have finally agreed on terms and SIGNED!!! • Original plan was to light with multiple 1 GigE lambdas on day 1 • Will light with 10 Gbps since all gear is in hand • Will share port with MERIT for NewNet

  7. New Directions • Pittsburgh connection under way • First Optical unit is installed in Youngstown • Have placed order to get fiber connected into our racks in Youngstown • Waiting on LOA from QED to get connection completed in Pitt

  8. I2 and NLR update • Nothing much new • Merger talks continue • Councils have been elected

  9. Joint Venture with State • Governor gave Executive order • Currently working on requirements and budget • We will not compromise our services to accomplish this

  10. Joint Venture with State • Three basic designs on table • Separate Lambda etc - not likely • Completely shared infrastructure - not likely • Shared 10 Gbps Lambda, separate but interconnected routers • They need enterprise services • We need core services • Pragmatic issue - They have two class B’s in their network and own AS • MPLS with peering?
