  2. # 8 – Martin Van Buren • First President born in the United States of America (after the revolutionary War) • Attended Kinderhook Academy • At the age of 14 he began to study law. • At age 21 he was admitted to the bar. (lawyer) • 1807: Hannah Hoes. • 1816-19: Attorney General of New York • 1821-28: U.S. Senator from New York

  3. # 8 – Martin Van Buren • 1829-1831: Jackson appoints him as Secretary of State. • 1833-37: Vice President of the U.S. during Jackson’s second term. • 1837-41: elected 8th Pres. Of the US

  4. #8 – Van Buren • 1837: Panic of 1837. People begin to panic and exchange their paper money for gold and silver. Banks run out of money and go out of business. 90% of all businesses fail in the east. • Known as “Martin Van Ruin” – blamed for the recession. Although it was Jackson who destroyed the Bank of the US. • Unable to run a second term.

  5. # 8 – Martin Van Buren • 1841: tries to run for re-election but loses. • Tries to run for President in 1844 but is defeated. • 1848: Tries to run for President again, but failed. • 1855: retires in Kinderhook, New York • July 24, 1862: Dies of natural causes, brought on by asthma.
