  1. Energy Potential, Kinetic, and More 8/10/2014 7

  2. Today’s Warmup • Potential and Kinetic Energy… a little song and video… • Potential energy, kinetic energy, Rube Goldberg, and OK-Go!

  3. Today’s Objectives • To learn about energy, its two main states: potential and kinetic, and its many forms • To learn how energy is transformed from one form to another • To understand that energy is never lost or created, just transferred/changed • Rollercoaster Lab activities!

  4. Energy- Use and Conservation of • Definitions: • Energy • Potential Energy • Kinetic Energy • Law of Conservation of Energy Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  5. Energy • For there to be movement there must be an input of energy. • Energy is: the ability to cause change. • Energy can light a room, heat a pot of water, move a bicycle…

  6. Energy • Energy can classified into two main categories: • Kinetic- the energy of motion • Potential- the stored energy due to position

  7. What are the different forms of Energy? • Energy has a number of different forms, all of which measure the ability of an object to do work on (or change) another object. • In other words, there are differentwaysthat an object can possess energy.

  8. What are the different forms of Energy? • Mechanical Energy • Chemical Energy • Electrical Energy • Thermal (Heat) Energy • Radiant Energy • Nuclear Energy • Others… gravitational, elastic, etc.

  9. Energy • Kinetic energy- the energy of motion

  10. Energy • Kinetic energy- the amount of kinetic energy an object has is based on its speed and mass… larger, faster objects have more kinetic energy

  11. Energy • Potential energy- the stored energy due to position (motion waiting to happen)

  12. Energy Transfer

  13. Energy Transfer AND “Slinky” video clips?!?!

  14. The Law of Conservation of Energy • Just as in the Law of Conservation Of Mass… • Energy can not be created or destroyed, just transformed from one form to another • The amount of energy in a closed system stays the same.

  15. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33 • What is energy and how does it behave? • In this investigation you will: • Discover the relationship between speed and height on a rollercoaster. • Describe how energy is conserved on a rollercoaster.

  16. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33

  17. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33 TIP: Make sure the photogate is tight against the bottom of the roller-coaster track.

  18. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33 1.9 1.9 1.9 1.9 1.9 1.9 1.9

  19. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 34-35 • What is the relationship between height and speed on our “rollercoaster”? How is energy changed from one form to another, and how does that relate to the Law of Conservation? • In this investigation you will: • Discover the relationship between speed and height on a rollercoaster. • Describe how energy is conserved on a rollercoaster.

  20. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 34-35

  21. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33 Measured Along Track Measure With Metric Ruler From Table Measured By Photogate Calculated With Formula (Speed=d/t)

  22. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33

  23. Energy Lab Activity- pg. 32-33

  24. What Did You Learn? • What is the relationship between Height and Speed? • Is it the same relationship between kinetic energy & potential energy?

  25. Potential & Kinetic Energy • Definitions: • Chp 6 of text • Energy • Potential Energy • Kinetic Energy • Law of Conservation of Energy Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  26. Make it a great day Mustangs!
