  1. Writing Linear Equations Day 1

  2. Bell Ringer 1/17 Write the equation of the line in slope intercept form. Identify slope (m) and y-intercept (b).

  3. What have we learned thus far? • y = mx + b and what the variables mean • How to find slope through an equation (m) and from a graph () and from two coordinate points ( • The four different types of slope • How to graph using slope intercept form • How to write an equation by looking at the graph

  4. Today’s Objectives • Today we will learn how to write a linear equation (y = mx + b) given the slope (m) and a coordinate point

  5. What two things do I need to write an equation of a line? Slope (m) and b (y intercept)

  6. Graphing vs Algebraically • I will first show you how you can use a point and a slope on graph to find the equation • Then I will show how to solve it algebraically

  7. Graphing given slope and a coordinate point

  8. We know the slope and now we have ‘b’. What would our equation be?

  9. Steps: Writing Linear Equations • Label your slope (m), and coordinate point (x, y) • Write your equation: y = mx + b • Substitute proper numbers for ‘m’, ‘x’, and ‘y’ • Solve for ‘b’ • Re-write the equation with ‘m’ and ‘b’

  10. JUST WATCH AND LISTEN 

  11. Just watch Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. Slope = 3 , (-1, 5)

  12. Just watch Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. m = 5, (1, 9)

  13. Guided Practice  1. Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. Slope = 2, (-3, -4)

  14. Guided Practice  2. Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. Slope = , ( 6, 1)

  15. Guided Practice  3. Write an equation in slope intercept form when given the slope and a point the line goes through. m= -4 , ( 2, -6)

  16. Independent Work – this will be a classwork grade. • # 1- 6

  17. Check HW

  18. Closure Could you write an equation of a line given two coordinate points? How do you think you would complete that? (*HINT* )

  19. Bell Ringer

  20. Today’s Objectives • Today we will learn how to write a linear equation given two coordinate points

  21. REVIEW!!!! • Given two coordinate points, can we find the slope? YES!! Ex) (2, 6) and (-1, 5)

  22. Find the slope : Independent (5 minutes on timer) ( 3, 7) and ( 8, -4) (-1, 6) and ( 3, 5) ( 3, 8) and ( 5, 10) ( 2, 4) and ( -3, 7)
