IST work-programme 2005-06 “Semantic based Knowledge & Content Systems” • develop semantic-based and context-aware systems to acquire, organise, personalise, share and use the knowledge embedded in web and multimedia content • maximise automation of the knowledge lifecycle • achieve semantic interoperability between heterogeneous information resources and services • pioneer intelligent content, which is self-describing, adaptive to context and user needs, and exhibits a seamless interaction with its surroundings and the user • knowledge acquisition and modelling • knowledge sharing and use • intelligent content

Knowledge acquisition and modelling • capture knowledge from raw, multimedia and web content (“add semantics”) • turn today’s poorly structured information into computer processable knowledge • components and sub-systems aimed at “content harvesting, search & categorisation”, for all types of digital content • interoperable ontologies for semantic webs, ontology maintenance and evolution, data driven approaches • not full “understanding”, as much “semantics” and “content annotation / interpretation” as is takes … • approx 35-40 Meuro funding

Knowledge sharing and reuse • from information to actionable meaning (“exploit semantics”) • data integration as well as application integration • inferencing and reasoning over networked information • beyond static knowledge • modelling of dynamic knowledge: from data through processes and workflows to semantic unification • semantic interoperability across organisations: shared knowledge spaces, collaborative environments • semantic Web Services as well as metadata based content access and management • integrative researchaimed at showcases for information-bound sectors: (e-)business, manufacturing, new media, e-science • approx. 50 Meuro funding

Intelligent content • pioneering path beyond today’s content: • knowledge is created while content is created • atomic content objects embody content proper, metadata / semantic descriptors, together with interface with “ambient intelligence” • self-describing, context aware, reactive to stimuli • communicate with user, digital and physical surroundings • aggregate to create compound objects and rich content services • unifying framework(s) and proof-of-the-concept methods and tools for • “automated” creation, management, personalisation … • of different content types, in different usage scenarios • commercial, corporate, educational, scientific • approx. 30-35 Meuro funding

Overview • IST workprogramme update • nearly 2 Beuro available for new projects in 2005-06 • two main calls: • call 4 due for publication around mid-November • closing date: 22 March 2005 (tbc) • projects (1,1 Beuro) due to start January 2006 • call 5 expected to be published in May 2005 • projects (0,7 Beuro) due to start 3Q 2006 • presentations and info sessions scheduled from early November onward • IST conference and exhibition: 15-17 November,The Hague

Semantic Web If a scalable way to add semantics to the World Wide Web (WWW) can be found, the Semantic Web will create a world where agents, search engines, and other programs can read semantic markup to decipher the real meaning of a web page. Semantic Web-aware agents will be able to retrieve computer readable facts, integrate and reason about those facts, answer questions, solve problems, and generally bring a new level of intelligence to the WWW that is unimaginable with today’s technology. Semantics As the integration and interoperability increases between different sectors, the need for semantics also increases as a mediator between the structure and content of the different knowledge bases. There will be a need, not just for semantics to mediate the structure and content, but also for the services themselves. The use of semantics is not confined to just the application sectors. Semantics will also be necessary to compose, federate and create complex services. ISTAG-WG8 report, March 2004

Semantic based Knowledge &Content Systems • aimed at intersection of WWW, multimedia, semantic Web and Web Services domains • merger and recasting of two previously separated Strategic Objectives: • semantic based knowledge (call 1) • cross media content (call 2) • broad constituency: 200+ submissions in 2003-04, 800+ Meuro requested, 33 proposals retained for funding • main features in 2005: • medium to long term R&D with short term by-products • generic technologies and platforms, portable across application domains • systems research, integration and interoperability • ambitious user-orientated showcases • shift in focus towards dynamic knowledge and active content
