  4. Philosophy Our team philosophy is that all children can learn. We believe that this is accomplished through building strong relationships with students, parents, and community.

  5. Goals & Expectations • Goals and expectations are aligned with the state learning standards for 5th Grade (TEKS – Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills - http://www.tea.state.tx.us/teks/index.html)

  6. STAAR • April 2 – Math • April 3 – Reading • April 24 – Science • Retests • May 14 and 15 (Math and Reading) • Summer June 25 and 26 If a student does not pass, a grade placement committee will meet and discuss the student’s promotion to the next grade.

  7. Behavioral Expectations Take care of yourself Take care of others Take care of the environment The 5th Grade Courtesy Policy has also been established.

  8. Dress Code • No make-up, please • Tank tops – must be 3 adult fingers wide on the shoulder • Shorts – need to be mid-thigh • Appropriate shoes for PE and the playground (closed toe) – they know what day they have PE, please don’t have them bring shoes, wear appropriate shoes on the right day

Daily Schedule • 7:15-7:45 – Morning Work • 7:45-7:50 – attendance/lunch count • 7:50-9:30 – 1st Rotation • 9:30-10:30 – 2nd Rotation (part 1) • 10:30-11:25 – Specials (Conference) • 11:25-12:00 – 2nd Rotation (part 2) • 12:00-1:00 – lunch/recess • 1:00-2:40 – 3rd rotation • 2:40-2:45 – homeroom duties

  11. As a school we will… 1. Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables the participating children to meet the State’s student academic achievement standards. 2. Hold parent-teacher conferences during which we will discuss your child’s achievements and goals. 3. Provide parents with frequent reports on your child’s progress. 4. Provide parents with opportunities to meet with staff for consultation and conferences. 5. Provide parents opportunities to volunteer and participate in their child’s class, and to observe classroom and school activities.

As parents, you can support your child’s learning in the following ways: • Monitor attendance • Read every night for 20 minutes • Volunteer in your child’s classroom • Participate in decisions relating to your child’s education • Promote positive use of your child’s extracurricular time. • Stay informed about your child’s education and communicating with the school by reading all notices from the school or the school district. • Serve, to the extent possible, on policy advisory groups.

LA/SS 1st Six Weeks – Foundations Study in Reading and Writing (frontloading a lot of content and practicing routines) 2nd – 6th Six Weeks – Comprehension Toolkit, Journeys, and various other resources Social Studies – USA Studies Weekly Late in the year we will be conducting a Problem Based Learning Project students will work on in small groups

  16. NetSchool • We will be utilizing NetSchool – a web-based program students can access on line to complete classwork and homework. • 2nd Six weeks is when we will start using this mostly at school in all subject areas.

  22. Lunch & Birthday’s • There is a special “Parent Picnic” table located in our Dining room by the windows. We ask that you only eat with your child because of the many food allergies we have on campus. • Birthday treats can be shared at recess or at the end of the school day.

  23. Dismissal Procedures • HOV- For families that car pool, we have an HOV lane. You need a yellow car tag for each child being picked up. Please make sure your kiddo and the teacher knows they are an HOV rider. • Walkers and Bike riders- If you would like to pick your child up from the walker area, you may meet them with a yellow car tag at the Kindergarten hallway door. • Unsupervised walkers and bike riders will be dismissed and escorted across the street by a staff member. A “Fast Pass” must be obtained in order for a student to be an unescorted walker/bike rider.

  24. Ride Changes If ride changes need to be made you notify the office before 2:15. Ride changes can not be made after this time. If you are picking up early for an appointment, we ask that the child be picked up prior to 2:15.

  25. Bus Riders For the safety of all, it is important that students follow the expectations and procedures established by the bus drivers. Students who have more than three bus infractions will be removed from the bus and alternative transportation will need to be provided by the family.

  26. Grades, Progress Reports and Report Cards • Electronic distribution of grade reports. Let the office know if a printed copy is needed. • E-school accounts are available for viewing students grades.

  27. Attendance • Texas state law requires students be in attendance 90% of the entire school day. • If your child is absent, please send a note to school with your child. • 5 tardies are equivalent to 1 unexcused absence. A student who arrives after 7:45 is considered tardy and needs to be signed in at the front office area by an adult or guardian. If the back door is closed, parents must go around to the front office and sign their child in.

  28. 2012-2013 Roanoke “Loud and Proud” Choir The registration window for choir will be from Tuesday, September 11, 2012 through Friday, September 14, 2012. The choir registration is an online form. To locate this form you will need to: 1. Go to the “Roanoke Elementary” website 2. Select the “Extra/Co– Curricular” tab at the top of the website. 3. Select the “Choir Registration” link on the left sidebar. 4. Fill in the registration form and select the “Submit” button of the form. 5. No student will be registered for choir until the choir registration form has been completed and submitted. Please see Mrs. Gentry and Mrs. Pitts if you have any questions.

  29. Membership contest currently in-progress – Class with the highest percentage of members will win a free spirit shirt and ice cream • Membership is $5.50 per person (adults only) per year • Membership forms are available on the school website • To learn about volunteer opportunities, email Robin Zost at Roanokevolunteers@gmail.com • We need volunteers for Dining Room helpers, each day from 10:30 to 11:15 or 11:15 to noon. • Yearbook cover contest – Last day to submit entries is this Friday, September 14 • Cookie dough fundraiser will begin this Thursday • Spirit wear order forms will be sent home this Friday • Questions about PTA – contact Jamie Winters-Johnson at jamiewj@sbcglobal.net • Join our Facebook group – Roanoke Elementary PTA (Texas)
