  4. Shoplifting Has Gone Big-Time • Shoplifting is steadily increasing • A good thief can haul off $5,000 to $10,000 per day • Groups of thieves are armed with floor plans and foil-lined bags to evade security sensors

  5. Anatomy of these Thieves • Operate with the training of a paramilitary • Very organized and planned out • “Low Risk, High Profit” is the goal • Gang members are often careful to steal little enough in a single strike to avoid serious charges if they are caught. • “At any one time, these individuals won't have a huge amount of goods, but they will be making thousands of trips.”

  6. Why Steal? • Thieves are reselling the stolen merchandise on-line • Pure profit • For Tangy Cheese Doritos???

  7. Retailer’s Call for Help • Lobbying to strengthen laws-stiffer penalties • NRF (National Retail Federation) is trying to make organized shoplifting a federal felony • Online vendors are starting to require serial numbers for each item being sold (this can catch stolen merchandise)
