Why have Classroom Observations? • Reinforces attention to focus on teaching and learning • Obtains a representative sample of the teacher’s performance in the classroom • Feedback is immediate either through email or face to face • Evaluators gather data about student learning and instructional practices • Stimulates Collaborative and Professional conversations

  3. Description of a Walkthrough • It’s a tool for school improvement • A process for giving and receiving non-threatening feedback from colleagues/ administrators • Snapshot of an instructional focus within a school • It is an informal process

  4. A Walkthrough is not an….. • Formal Observation • Audit • Dog and Pony Show • Isolated Event • Invitation to discuss inappropriately or gossip • “Gotcha” opportunity for supervisors or peers

  5. Benefits of the Walkthrough Process • Supports continuous school improvement • Reinforces teaching and learning • Makes the principals visible throughout the school • Aligns teachers and principals classroom expectations • Uses time effectively • Creates common ground

Benefits of the Walkthrough Process continued… • Enables principals to know the teachers strength and weakness • Reinforces the principals vested interest in what goes on daily in school • Improves rapport with students and decreases discipline issues • Provides quality reflection • Provides for additional professional dialogue

  7. How are these observations done? • These are short observations not lasting more than 5 minutes • The use of electronic Peripherals such as: I Phones, I Pads or any other tablet • The Key is the Application: • Ease of setup • Ease of use • What are the reports you need?

  9. Sample Questions? • We aligned our walkthrough observation with IPEG’s as much as possible • It is difficult to determine consistency • Teachers want feedback • Each School Level, School Environment and School Staff is Unique. • You should develop questions that benefit your campus
