  1. Geothermal Power Presented By: John Trundt

  2. 2 Main Uses of Geothermal Energy Heating • Space Heating • Spas • District Heating Power Plants • Industrial Processes • Agricultural Applications

  3. How It Works: • The first commercial power plant was built in 1911 in Italy • The first down hole heat exchanger was created in 1930 • Binary Cycle developed in 1967 in Russia • Supplies approx 0.3% of the global electricity demand

  4. Power Plants: • Worldwide commercial plants produce approx 10 GW of power • Direct geothermal heating contributes an extra 28 GW • 5 countries produce more than 15% of their electricity from geothermal sources • Iceland, Philippines, El Salvador, Costa Rica, & Kenya • Plants use 3.5 square km per GW of electrical production versus 32 for coal • Environmentally safe • No production of green house gasses

  5. Direct Heating: • Pipes are buried anywhere from 6-300ft underground • 3.5-5 times more efficient than most fossil fuel furnaces • Polyethylene pipes used will last up to 50 years
