CHAPTER 10 – Motivating Safety Behaviour at Work Safety Behaviour • There are several ways to categorize health and safety programs: • Engineering Interventions • Focus on changing the physical environment to reduce exposure to hazards by either providing personal protective equipment or redesigning the physical workplace

CHAPTER 10 – Motivating Safety Behaviour at Work Administrative Interventions • Modify procedures and exposure in the work environment • Examples include: job rotation, scheduling of work breaks, use of safety officers, use of standard operating procedures Behavioural Interventions • Focus on changing employee attitudes, knowledge, or behaviour about health and safety • Examples include: information campaigns, risk awareness, skills training, implementation of behaviour-modification techniques

CHAPTER 10 – Motivating Safety Behaviour at Work • Organizational Health and Safety Programs: • have the following elements: • Program Objectives -health and safety program needs to have clearly stated goals and objectives -input from various workplace parties (such as JHSC, employees, managers, all departments) is key to identifying key objectives and gaining buy in to help achieve these goals

Accountabilities -a policy cannot be properly enforced without specific individuals and departments being accountable for its success. -setting actions, timetables and who, specifically, is accountable is key

CHAPTER 13 – Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion Programs Health Promotion Programs: • EAPs (Employee Assistance Programs) • programs designed to help employees with problems that may interfere with productivity, including alcohol and other drug abuse, emotional or behavioural problems, and financial or legal problems

  12. CHAPTER 13 – Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion Programs Health Promotion Programs: • Stress Management Programs • programs designed to educate workers about the causes and consequences of stress and to teach relaxation and coping skills

CHAPTER 13 – Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion Programs Health Promotion Programs: • Worksite Health Promotion • programs designed to affect an employee’s health practices or physical lifestyle • Most common: • Smoking cessation • Hypertension screening (high blood pressure) • Nutritional and weight control • Physical fitness

  14. CHAPTER 13 – Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion Programs • Developing a Successful Health Promotion Program • a program is only worthwhile if it’s achieving its goals • a workplace health promotion program will only be successful if employees make use of it

  15. CHAPTER 13 – Workplace Wellness and Health Promotion Programs • essential elements include: • Clear written policy • Management support • On-site coordinator • Supervisory training • Employee education • Counselling • Union support
