  2. Goals • Each child will grow in their personal relationship with God. • Each child will experience success. • Each child will develop effective study skills. • Each child will enjoy learning as a life-long pursuit. • Each child will work in partnership with their parents and teacher.

  4. Religion With Miss Smith • We will celebrate Mass every Wednesday. • Read, interpret, apply scripture to life • Sacramental studies • Respond to call of the Gospel through community service • Make moral decisions consistent with Church teachings

  5. Reading/Literature • Literature studies • Reading book – Journey’s Language Arts

  6. Writing • Writing assignments will be given with each English unit and assessed using the Journey’s literature book and writing. • Fifth grade & sixth grade standard based writing assignments • Guidelines and point values will be given for each of these assignments • Some assignments require oral presentations and/or demonstrations

Science Sciences stresses the importance of critical thinking and open mindedness, and is a discipline founded on continual investigation, self-review, and gradual unfolding of ideas. • Life Science: Cells to Body System • Physical Science: Matter, Forces, Motion • Earth & Space Science: Earth, Moon & Beyond

  9. SOCIAL STUDIES • U.S. History • Social and political issues • Geography • The focal point of 5th grade social studies is the United States. The geography of the land and the ways of life of our early inhabitants dependent upon their surroundings. The expolorers that opened the New World to further settlements and the movement

  10. 6th Grade Social Studies • The focus in 6th grade is World Cultures & Geography. 6th grade social studies feels like a whirlwind world tour. We start the year with a study of Geography then Western Hemisphere nations.We study a little history and geography from each continent. The emphasis in World History and Geography from Harcourt is learning about cultures.

  11. Grades • SchoolSpeak is our online grading program. This program allows parents to view their child’s grades online at any time. Parents are asked to check weekly on the progress of their child. • Late work loses one grade level if one day late. If the assignment is more than 2 days late, or if the assignment is missing, the score becomes a zero. • Total points earned divided by total possible points • 94-100%=A 65-74%=D • 85-93%=B Less than 64%=F • 75-84%=C

Homework • Agendas should remain on desktop to be available for assignment updates. • Agendasmustbe taken home and returned daily. • Parent & students may check SchoolSpeak for daily assignments. • Guidelines are provided to assist students in understanding specific assignment requirements. • Advanced notification is always given for tests and long term assignments.

  13. SJV Sports Teams • Girls’ Teams: Volleyball, Softball, & Basketball • Boys’ Teams: Football, Basketball, & Baseball • No Pass No Play

  14. Wellness Policy • To promote healthy eating and exercise habits within our community • Students are required to bring healthy snacks to school. Don’t forget the water each day!! • Birthdays can still be celebrated by sharing healthy snack choices rather than cookies or cupcakes

  15. SpecialActivities • Class parties planned by homeroom parents • Field Trips – Andre House, State Capitol, BizTown, & Adopt-A-Pilot • Fund Raisers • ,Auction, School Mass bake sale

Biz Town • Volunteer sign up through SchoolSpeak • Teaches understanding of economic concepts and consumer skills • Curriculum follows fifth grade state standards. • Combination of classroom lessons and activities & site visit for 5 hour hands-on business simulation at Biz Town site in Tempe • Tuesday, March 18 , 2014

Volunteer Opportunities • Homeroom planners • Reading groups • “Art” instructors • Arts/crafts talented individuals to help with holiday art projects • Coordinate Scholastic/Arrow Book Club orders • Guest speakers willing to share about their profession or information/pictures of an interesting/unique trip

  18. Miscellaneous • Uniforms (school policy will be followed) • Healthy snack, lunch and water bottle • No recreational equipment from home • Join us on Wednesday mornings for Mass
