  16. Seven Smart Reading Strategies Step 1: Read and Box the title Step 2: Number the paragraphs and/or text features. Step 3: Read each paragraph and/or text feature. Stop and think about what you’ve read. Write 1 to 3 key words in the margin for each paragraph. Step 4: Read each question and underline 1 to 3 key words that connect back to the text. Step 5: Read each answer and eliminate wrong choices. Step 6: Prove your answer. Step 7: Mark your answer.

  17. FCAT Writing 2012 Grades 8 and 10 How will the scoring of the spring 2012 FCAT Writing assessment change? In addition to the elements of focus, organization, support, and conventions described in the rubrics, scoring decisions will include expanded expectations regarding the following: • Scoring will include increased attention to the correct use of standard English conventions. The current rubrics, which will be used for scoring in 2012, include expectations regarding the basic conventions of standard English, yet the scoring of this element in the past has been applied with leniency. Responses will continue to be scored holistically as draft writing, but scoring will be more stringent. Responses earning scores of 4 or 5 must at least generally follow the conventions of sentence structure, mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling. To earn a score of 6, sentence structure will be varied, and few, if any, errors will occur in mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling.

  18. FCAT Writing 2012 (Grades 8 and 10) • Scoring will include increased attention to the quality of details, requiring use of relevant, logical, and plausible support, rather than contrived statistical claims or unsubstantiated generalities. The quality of the support depends on word choice, specificity, depth, relevance, and thoroughness. Responses earning high scores must include specific and relevant supporting details that clarify the meaning, i.e., the point of the paragraph or the central theme of the response. Rote memorization or overuse of compositional techniques, such as rhetorical questions, implausible statistics, or pretentious language, is not the expectation for quality writing at any grade level.

  19. FCAT Writing • Prompts will be expository (writing to explain) or persuasive (writing to convince). • Each student will be given one prompt to answer.

  20. Post Secondary Education Readiness Test (PERT) • What is the PERT? • Florida's new common placement test replacing the CPT as per Florida Statutes 1008.30. • Used to determine college ready credit courses in math and English. • Comprised of three 25 item, computer adaptive subtests in reading, writing and mathematics. • Results are used by high schools to advise students of any reading deficiencies and to provide 12th grade students appropriate postsecondary preparatory instruction prior to high school graduation.

  21. Who is administered the PERT? • All degree-seeking first-time-in-college students and all college credit certificate-seeking students who wish to register in 12 or more cumulative credits must take the PERT. • Requirements on the Grade 10 FCAT/FCAT 2.0: Levels 2, or 3 on the Grade 10 FCAT Reading, and/or Levels 2, 3, or 4 on the Grade 10 FCAT Mathematics • Students who already have ACT, SAT, or CPT scores in ISIS may be exempted from the PERT administration. • If scores are not in ISIS, students must provide original score report to school. • Retain a copy of score report.

  22. College-Ready Cut Scores

  23. What happens if a student doesnot meet college-readiness? • Students who do not meet the state established college ready cut scores on the PERT or another approved college entrance test in Reading, Writing, and or Mathematics(ACT, SAT, or CPT) must be enrolled in postsecondary preparatory instruction in l2th grade prior to graduation. • Further information regarding course placement will be provided byCurriculum and Instruction.
