  1. From Darkness to Light I Peter 2.9-10

  2. Introduction

  3. Take-Home Truth • “To turn them from darkness to life, that’s why you have your life.”

  4. “To turn them from darkness to life, that’s why you have your life.” • The World’s Status Now • Our Status Then • Our Status Now (and the task)

  5. The World’s Status Now (verse 10) • Romans 1.22-32 “Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lust of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,”

  6. “because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for hose that are contrary to nature;”

  7. “And the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameful acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done”

  8. “They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless.”

  9. “Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those that practice them.”

  10. The World’s Status Now • “Benson Hedges”—Fun. • “Holy Ghost when do you come out to play, because if the Lord is gonna find me, He better start looking today…I will set sail to the streetswhere I don't care to be forgivenI want to be forgotten.I don't care to be forgivenWhen Lord I only want to be forgotten!”

  11. The World’s Status Now • “I’m Yours”—Jason Mraz • “I guess what I'll be saying is there ain't no better reasonTo rid yourself of vanities and just go with the seasons. It's what we aim to do.Our name is our virtue.”

  12. The World’s Status Now • Verse 10—Their Status • No people • No mercy

  13. Application • The world’s status now: • They are in darkness, sin, and are ignorant to their own destruction. They are no people with no mercy reserved for them.

  14. Our Status Then (verses 9-10) • Verse 10—No people, no mercy • Verse 9—in darkness • I Corinthians 6.9-11

  15. “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nr greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God…”

  16. “…and such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ by the Spirit of our God.”

  17. Our Status Then • “For God demonstrated His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”—Romans 5.8 • So then, the power of the cross is in the fact that he died while we were sinners.

  18. Application • Our Status Then: • That was us. We are no better than they, just sanctified. We need to communicate our case of hopelessness to show the hope they actually have.

  19. Our Status Now (and the task) (verse 9) • Romans 5.6-10 • “For while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would even dare to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

  20. “Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him form the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life.”

  21. Our Status Now (and the task) • Royal Priesthood • Holy People • To turn them from darkness to life.

  22. Application • Our status now: • Task: turn them from darkness to light.

  23. Conclusion • “To Light”—Summertime’s End
