Why did receiving a CWA paycheck make people so happy? 2. Why did New Deal programs like the CWA raise the hopes of the American people?

Roosevelt Republicans re-nominated Hoover Democrats nominate 2-time NY governor FDR distant cousin of Teddy Roosevelt Roosevelt wanted to try something, even if it failed Roosevelt won, Democrats controlled both houses Waiting for Roosevelt to Take Over 4 month lame-duck period Ended with the 20th amendment but not this election During the 4 months, economy worsened

Assembled the brain trust during the wait Initiated the New Deal Once inaugurated, FDR began the 1st 100 days 15 New Deal laws passed Reforming Banking and Finance Many Americans came to fear banks March 5, 1933 FDR authorized a bank holiday Congress passed Emergency Banking Relief Act those banks that were solvent could open An Important Fireside Chat March 12 FDR told Americans to put their money back into the banks

  5. Congress passed Glass-Steagall Banking Act of 1933 created the FDIC Congress passed Federal Securities Act May 1933 transparency to public corporations Securities and Exchange Commission-1934 prevent insider trading 21st amendment-legalized alcohol once again needed source of tax revenue

Helping the American People Assisting Farmers AAA-raise crop prices by lowering production farmers got paid not to farm Many Americans disagreed with this policy Providing Work Projects Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) men 18-25 building roads, parks, planting trees, soil-erosion/flood control projects $30/month with $25 of it sent home Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) $250 million to states as grants $250 million for direct relief for the needy

Public Works Administration provided money to states to create jobs-built schools/community buildings National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) created the National Recovery Administration set prices for products, working hours, banned child labor section of NIRA guaranteed right to unionize and bargain collectively Tennessee Valley Authority-May 1933 renovated and built dams in Tennessee River Valley 1000s of jobs, flood control, hydroelectric power
