  1. Do Now: Label the <3 on page 15 Fun Fact of the Day

  2. What is this?

  3. What is this? Shark skin under a microscope. Shark skin doesn't look like normal fish skin. It's made of microscopic diamond shaped scales with rough edges, called "denticles". These are thought to share an evolutionary origin with teeth - indeed, they have much more in common with teeth than with scales. Like teeth, they consist of a central cavity made of pulp surrounded by dentine and enamel. The flexible but irregular surface is impossible for barnacles and other micro-organisms to cling to, as well as decreasing drag and turbulence. So just when you thought sharks couldn't get any scarier, it turns out that their entire bodies are literally COVERED with teeth

  11. Blood – the fluid medium that transports O2 and CO2 throughout your body

  12. Plasma – fluid part of the blood; 90% water

  13. Red Blood Cells Blood cell that contains hemoglobin; also called a erythrocyte Hemoglobin – iron-containing protein found in RBCs that helps transport oxygen

  14. WhiteBlood Cells Blood cell that fights infection, parasites, and bacterial disease; also called leukocytes

  15. Platelet Cell fragments in the blood that aid in blood clotting

  16. Cardiovascular Diseases High Blood Pressure – when arterial blood pressure remains above normal Atherosclerosis – arteries become narrower and inelastic because of deposits of cholesterol and other fatty materials on their inner walls

  17. Cardiovascular Diseases Heart Disease – blockage of coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle

  18. Blood Conditions Anemia – blood fails to transport sufficient amounts of oxygen the body needs Sickle-Cell Anemia – sickle shaped RBCs; can cause blockage in capillaries; less ability to hold oxygen

  19. Blood Conditions Leukemia – disease in bone marrow in which there is an uncontrolled production of nonfunctional WBCs Hemophilia – poor clotting ability of the blood
