2. The Crew • These were the words heard around the world on July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon.

3. The launch • On July 16, 1969, the Saturn V rocket took off from the Kennedy Space Center to the moon.

4. Landing on the moon • Armstrong had to use the manual controls to steer the ship to a clear landing site. • The first foot print on the moon was planted by Neil Armstrong at 1:56 A.M. • 14 minutes later, Aldrin stepped out of the lunar module.

5. On the moon • Aldrin set up experiments while Armstrong took pictures of the moon’s landscape. • Collins was orbiting the moon in the Columbia. • Moon rocks were collected to study back on earth. • An American flag was left on the moon as well as a plaque.

6. Returning to earth • The lunar module left the moon two hours and twenty-one minutes after landing. • The crew splashed down in the pacific, 950 miles from Hawaii.

7. Events leading up to the moon landing • The Soviets sent the first man into space in Sputnik. • President Kennedy started a race to the moon with the Soviets. • The Soviets sent an unmanned craft to the moon, but the Americans sent a man.

8. How did it effect people and society? • It gave people a sense of pride. • The crew were heroes. • They were in parades and went on a tour with Nixon.

9. How did it effect economy and government? • Gave back pride to the government. • Gave a good reason for the government to put more money into the space program.

10. Continuing effects • More funding developed the space shuttle. • The moon is no longer the focus of space exploration. • The crew continued to be an inspiration.
