  2. TIPS ON NOTE TAKING: GREEN - Don't write it down if you don't want. It is there
for you to read and make a mental note. BLUE - You should write this information down, but put it in
your own words. Don't worry about coping it exactly. Put
it in a way that you'll remember. BLACK - You need to write this down. It is important. If
you can find a way to write it using less words that's okay, but make sure you are getting this information in your notes. RED - This is very important and needs to be written in your
notes EXACTLY as it is on the board.

  10. The Age of Emperors How did Prince Shotoku unite Japan and set the stage for the development of a strong central government? What characteristics make a good leader?

  11. Traditional Society Who can tell me what the social science vocab definition of
society is?

  12. Traditional Society

  13. Traditional Society * The head of many local
Japanese clans was a chief. * The occupations that people
had in the clans were farmers,
craft workers, weavers and
soldiers. Statue of Chief Forest Kami * Kami were found in natural
objects such as mountains or

  14. Founding Myths Does anybody remember the origin story of any other
civilization or religion that we have discussed this year?

  15. Founding Myths * Shinto myths explained
how Japan came to be ruled
by an emperor. * Ninigi grandson of the Sun
Goddess she gave him three gifts: 1) a bronze mirror (truth). 2) an iron sword (wisdom). 3) a curved jewel (kindness). * Jimmu was Ninigi's grandson
and he became Japan's first
emperor.

  16. Japanese Imperial Family How are emperors usually chosen in an empire?

  17. Japanese Imperial Family * About 2,000 years ago, warlike clans were competing for
land and power. * The Yamato clan was the
winner of this power struggle
and finally took control of
Japan. * They claimed to be
descendants from the royal
"Sun" (Sun Goddess). * This meant that their
emperors were living gods on
Earth.

  18. Borrowing from China Buddha Confucius What were some things we already know Japan
borrowed from China?

  19. Borrowing from China * In 593, Prince Shotoku took power in Japan regent for
the empress, his Aunt Suiko. * He was a big fan of China
and Chinese culture. * He supported Buddhism
during his rule. * He studied Confucianism and
believed that it could help unify
his country.

  20. Borrowing from China * To unite Japan under a strong central government Prince
Shotoku had to reduce the
power of the clan leaders. * The Seventeen Articles was
Japan's first constitution and was
based on Confucian and Buddhist
thought.

  21. Later Reforms How do you predict that Prince Shotoku would reduce
the power of the clan leaders?

  22. Later Reforms * Prince Shotoku died in 622.
His supporters carried on his
reforms. * In 642 they instituted the
Taika (Great Change) reforms. * These were new laws that
made everyone subject to the
emperor.

  23. Later Reforms * Lands/people controlled by
the clan leaders now belonged to
the emperor. * In return clan leaders were
given paid government official
jobs. From this picture above can you guess what happened to the clan leaders that didn't go along with these reforms?

  24. Important things to remember: * To unite Japan Prince Shotoku had to shrink the power
of the clans. * As regent Prince Shotoku encouraged Buddhism and
Chinese culture.
