The Process • Your group will receive a set of story problems. • Your group will receive 2 sets of index cards. • The first set will have equations written on it. • The second set will have steps involved in solving the equations written on them. • Your group will need to pick one story problem to start with. Each person glue this problem into your comp. book. • Match the story problem with the equation that best represents it.

The Process cont. • Sort through the step cards and find the steps that will solve the equation, including the correct card with the final answer. • Copy the steps and final answer into your comp. book next to/beneath the problem you picked. • Check your answer in your comp. book by substituting the answer for the variable. • Explain in a paragraph the process you went through to pick the equation, match the steps, and check your answer. • Repeat the process with another story problem until time runs out or you run out of story problems

  7. Question #1 • A submarine is situated some meters below sea level. It descends (goes down) 160.04 meters and then ascends (goes up) 390.87 meters and comes to rest at 9.3 meters below sea level. Solve to find the missing information.

  8. Question #2 • Roman Civilization began in 509 B.C. and lasted for some years. If it ended in 476 A.D., how many years did it last?

  9. Question #3 • In the Sahara Desert one day it was 136°F. In the Gobi Desert on the same day the temperature was -51°F. What was the difference in these two temperatures?

  10. Question #4 • Metal mercury at room temperature is a liquid. Its melting point is -39°C. The freezing point of alcohol is -114°C. How much warmer is the melting point of mercury than the freezing point of alcohol?

  11. Question #5 • Mt. Everest, the highest elevation in the world, is 29,028 feet above sea level. If the difference between this and the lowest point in the Dead Sea is 30,340 feet, what is the elevation of the Dead Sea?

  12. Question #6 • At sunrise, the outside temperature was -1 F. By lunch time the temperature had risen some degrees. It then fell 4°F by that night. The Final temperature that night was 12°F. Solve to find the missing information.
