  5. Out of Programme Research (OOPR) • If you’re undertaking a period of out of programme research, you will need to obtain permission from both your Deanery and the RCPath in advance of the start of your research. • This process must be started ahead of time while you are applying for funding (as it may take some time). • Decide with your clinical and educational supervisors whether to apply for your research project to count towards your CCT or whether your CCT will need to be extended (you cannot change your mind later). • Complete the RCPath application form: https://www.rcpath.org/trainees/training/application-forms.html. • If you have questions, please contact training@rcpath.org

  6. Academic Clinical Fellowships (ACFs) • Intended to provide a base from which a trainee at an early stage of their career can develop a passion for research and generate pilot data that will allow them to apply for funding to come out of programme and complete a PhD or MD. • Usually funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) although similar posts with alternative funding may be available.  • Are for up to 3 years, during which the trainee should spend 25% of their time on a research project. Trainees appointed to ACF posts are usually early in their training i.e. ST1-3. • Undergo an annual academic ARCP where both academic and clinical progression will be assessed. If trainees fail to progress in the academic stream or do not want to continue in research after three years then they revert to ordinary specialist training; however the expected progression is to a funded higher degree.

  7. Write for the Bulletin • You can write short articles for the Training section of the Bulletin. This is a good way to practice writing and get your name known. • Contact the Editor of the Training section tauseef.kapadi@nhs.net to discuss your ideas for an article.

  8. RCPath Research Publishing Gateway • Provides an online research forum for those interested in the study of the pathology of human and animal diseases. • Hosted by F1000Research and gives our members the opportunity to rapidly publish original research, case reports and validation studies of laboratory methods and antibodies. Subject to satisfactory peer review by experts, articles will be approved for inclusion on Pubmed and other bibliographic databases. You can also submit posters, slides, and documents including clinical audits. • Provides an exciting opportunity for both experienced researchers and trainees to build an online community where ideas can circulate rapidly and be developed with other pathologists. • Author publishing charges apply but the College is offering financial support to those looking to submit their work, see the College website for further details.

  9. Trainee Research Medals • Trainee Research Medals are awarded by the College every year. • See the College website for details of what is required and deadlines. • These are an excellent opportunity to receive recognition for your research and look good on the CV.
