  1. Blood Sugar Balance Solutions

  2. Problems… • PCOS • Fatty Liver • Stroke • Dementia • Depression (elliot blass) • Inflammation • Gout • Heart Disease • Cancer • Diabetes • High OXIDIZED cholesterol • High triglycerides • Obesity (apple shape) • Infertility (SHBG, androgen shift) • PCOS • Fatty Liver • Stroke • Dementia • Depression (elliotblass) • Inflammation • Gout

  3. WHY??? • 150 pounds refined sugar/HFCS per person per year • Omega 6/Omega 3 ratio (TOO MUCH GRAIN!!!!!) • Old Food Pyramid • Sedentary Lifestyle • Conventional Medicine “Outside In Fix” conditioning (Culture of Death)

  4. Insulin Resistance and Syndrome X • Abdominal obesity is the form of obesity most strongly associatedwith the metabolic syndrome. It presents clinically as increasedwaist circumference. • Atherogenic dyslipidemia manifests inroutine lipoprotein analysisby raised triglycerides and lowconcentrations of HDL cholesterol.A more detailed analysisusually reveals other lipoprotein abnormalities,eg, increasedremnant lipoproteins, elevated apolipoproteinB, small LDL particles, and small HDL particles. All of theseabnormalities have beenimplicated as being independently atherogenic. • Elevated bloodpressure strongly associates with obesity andcommonly occursin insulin-resistant persons. Hypertension thuscommonly islisted among metabolic risk factors. However, someinvestigatorsbelieve that hypertension is less "metabolic"than other metabolic-syndromecomponents. Certainly, hypertensionis multifactorial in origin. For example, increasing arterialstiffness contributes significantlyto systolic hypertensionin the elderly. Even so, most conferenceparticipants favoredinclusion of elevated blood pressure asone component of themetabolic syndrome. • Insulin resistanceis present in the majority of people withthe metabolic syndrome. It strongly associates with other metabolicrisk factors andcorrelates univariately with CVD risk. Theseassociations, combinedwith belief in its priority, accountfor the term insulin resistancesyndrome. Even so, mechanismsunderlying the link to CVD riskfactors are uncertain, hencethe ATP III’s classificationof insulin resistance asan emerging risk factor. Patients withlongstanding insulinresistance frequently manifest glucoseintolerance, anotheremerging risk factor. When glucose intoleranceevolves intodiabetes-level hyperglycemia, elevated glucoseconstitutes amajor, independent risk factor for CVD. • A proinflammatorystate, recognized clinically by elevationsof C-reactive protein(CRP), is commonly present in personswith metabolic syndrome.Multiple mechanisms seemingly underlieelevations of CRP. Onecause is obesity, because excess adiposetissue releases inflammatorycytokines that may elicit higherCRP levels. • A prothromboticstate, characterized by increased plasma plasminogenactivatorinhibitor (PAI)-1 and fibrinogen, also associateswith the metabolicsyndrome. Fibrinogen, an acute-phase reactantlike CRP, risesin response to a high-cytokine state. Thus, prothrombotic andproinflammatory states may be metabolicallyinterconnected.

  5. Why Does Insulin Matter? • Insulin is the “storage hormone” THRIFTY GENE • takes good cholesterol (HDL) and turns it into (LDL) and Tryglycerides • Increases belly fat = inflammation • Increases inflammation • Increases blood pressure • Poor nutrient status and lots of sugar and carbs creates insulin resistancewhere your cells don’t hear or don’t process insulin’s message so your pancreas makes MORE, and more, and more! This is the problem (syndrome X, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance) you MUST reverse! • Multivitamin or nutrient dense medical food • Pure, Clean, and Safe fish oil to improve insulin signaling

  6. Tests • Glucose (alone or part of metabolic panel) want in 80’s or below. • Fasting Insulin – ideal at 2 or below • HgA1C – below 6 • Lipid Panel • Triglyceride/HDL ratio (2 or less is considered ideal4 – high, 6 - much too high) • C-Reactive Protein (systemic inflammation) • Ferritin - important independent risk factor for heart disease • Waist circumference • women 31 inches = slight health risk, over 35 inches = substantially increased health risk. • Men - Waist of over 37 inches = slight health risk. Over 40 inches = substantially increased health risk.

  7. Insulin Resistant Brain Cells Have More Plaque

  8. Sugar in the blood stimulates secretion of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin binds to receptors on the membrane, triggering intracellular communication.

  9. These vesicles fuse to the membrane surface and provide transport for sugar into the cells to be utilized for the production of energy by the mitochondria. The insulin signal on the membrane’s surface stimulates production and mobilization of vesicles containing specialized GLUT 4 molecules, responsible for membrane uptake of sugar.

  10. Stimuli like insulin and exercise cause it to move to, and become active by embedding in, the cell membrane. Impairment of insulin stimulated movement of GLUT-4 is the most obvious cause of insulin resistance. GLUT-4 is the main insulin sensitive transport protein embedded in the cell membrane and is responsible for transporting glucose into the cell.

  11. Receptors on the nuclear membrane (PPAR Alpha and Gamma), activated by certain fatty acids, regulate gene expression that contributes to proper glucose homeostasis and energy production in the mitochondria.

  12. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) binds to PPAR Gamma and Alpha, stimulating nuclear transcription. The agents produced as a result are key to proper glucose homeostasis and energy production.

  13. An unhealthy diet, high in refined carbohydrates, causes rapid elevation of blood sugar. The pancreas responds by increasing insulin output.

  14. If the capacity of the insulin receptors is compromised due to nutrient insufficiencies, the internal message to the cells is reduced and the efficiency of the cell is compromised.

  15. The insulin signal can be further attenuated by inflammatory mediators such as NF-KappaB and cytokines such as TNF alpha. When this happens, fewer GLUT 4 vesicles are formed and glucose uptake is compromised. X

  16. Gene activation by PPAR Alpha and Gamma may also be compromised, leading to further reduction in the cell’s ability to produce energy.

  17. That’s a fire in the belly that is not good! “A growing list of adipocytokines involved in inflammation(IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-alpha, TGF-beta,) and the acute-phase response (serum amyloid A, PAI-1) have been found to be increased in the metabolic syndrome.”Aliment Pharmacol Ther. 2005 Nov;22 Suppl 2:3-10 PMID: 16225463 Below “. . . the chronic inflammatory profile which frequently goes together with visceral obesity.”

  18. Glycemic Index vs Insulin Index • GI = how much a food raises blood glucose • II = how much a food raises INSULIN Protein-rich foods • White bread 100 +/- 0 100 +/- 0 100 • Eggs 42 +/- 16 31 +/- 6 150 • Cheese 55 +/- 18 45 +/- 13 146 • Beef 21 +/- 8 51 +/- 16 176 • Lenils 62 +/- 22 58 +/- 12 133 • Fish 28 +/- 13 59 +/- 18 150 • Baked beans 114 +/- 18 120 +/- 19 168

  19. Why Raw Works for Blood Sugar/Insulin Issues • More FIBER to slow food absorption • Anti-oxidants to keep insulin receptors from becoming oxidized and damaged • Free electrons = more anti-oxidant / ALKALIZING power (hormones cannot bind in an excessively acidic environment) • More MINERALS (especially Magnesium, Chromium, Vanadium) • Anti-inflammatory (protects receptors, allows good signaling to the DNA) • Less fat tissue = less inflammatory chemicals created (TNF alpha and interleukens) = better signal transmission

  20. Step 1: DAILY MOVEMENT THERAPY • Question…Does it HURT to exercise? • YES? Then you MUST get to the root of the problem and FIX IT because MOVEMENT IS LIFE. “If you can’t, you must!” • START by getting back on track with pain free movement... • Get stiff/stuck joints moving (chiropractic/manual therapy) • Erase and replace damaging posture and movement patterns • Reconnect to the awareness of your “core/anti-gravity system” to give you strength, stability, and confidence in your movement. • There is ALWAYS something you can do even if you’re in the worst of pain. Isometrics, aquatherapy, power breathing, imagined movement

  21. DAILY MOVEMENT THERAPY (cont.) AerobicMovement at 180-age formula: 1. Subtract your age from 180 2. Modify that number based on below criteria A. If you have, or are recovering from a major illness (heart disease, any operation or hospital stay) or are on any regular medication. (SUBTRACT 10) B. If you’ve not exercised before, or if you have exercised and are recovering from an injury. If you’re regressing in you’re training or competition. If you get colds or flu easily, or have allergies. (SUBTRACT 5) C. If you’ve been exercising up to 2 years without any problems and you’ve not had colds or flu more than once or twice a year (SUBTRACT 0) D. You’ve been exercising for more than 2 years without any problems while making progress in competition without injury (ADD 5)

  22. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) The HIIT group lost over 3 times as much subcutaneous fat as the Endurance training group despite expending less than half as many calories. (20 week program, 17 subjects) Increases DHEA and Growth Hormone (better fat burning/anti-aging) Main Idea: Go all out then COMPLETELY recover (down to about 180-age -10 or more. Fight/flight then RECOVER = more muscle gain and more fat burning throughout rest of day… CAUTION!!! You MUST be biomechanically sound so you don’t injure yourself in the process!
