  1. Bell-work 8/10/12 Looking at the map on page 100 answer: What English Political Traditions spread to the colonies(there are three)? What two Enlightenment thinkers impacted colonial rule, what were their main ideas (look at the dialogue box)? Create a hypothesis to the following historical question: Would English rule and government affect American colonists? You will prove or disprove your thesis after the mini-lecture EQ: How did English ideas about rule and government affect the American colonies?

Before we get started…. • Objective: The student will be able to hypothesize if English ideas about government affected the colonies as evidenced by a completed flow diagram with 90% accuracy • Flip to page 22 of your INB, where does our objective fit into our overall unit learning goal. We are now looking into colonial life 

  3. New Vocabulary • Legislature-group of people who have the power to make laws • Bill or Rights-written list of freedoms that a government promises to protect • Habeas Corpus-person cannot be held in prison without being charged with a crime • Freedom of the Press-the right of journalists to publish the truth without restriction or penalty • Libel-publishing statements that damage a person’s reputation

  4. Governing the Colonies The New England, the Middle, and the Southern colonies developed in some unique ways. But they were all English colonies, and they therefore shared a common English heritage What ideas do you think sailed across the Atlantic with the English colonists?

  6. English Documents that affected English citizens and the Colonists: English colonists brought with them the ideas that they had political rights. Where did these ideas come from? Magna Carta- government document written by English nobility in 1215. It limited the power of the King and protected English citizens. Guaranteed right to trial by jury.

Parliament-nobles formed a council to advise the King which turned into Parliament. Greatest power was the right to approve new taxes, gave Parliament a degree of control over the monarch

English Bill or Rights- government document written by English Parliament, increased power of Parliament while further reducing the power of the King. Was a list of freedoms that must be protected by the monarchy

Colonial Self Government: • In North America, the colonists wanted a part in governing themselves, the idea of a representative government was dear to them. • The first from of representative government began in Jamestown when the ________ __ __________ was created in 1619. • Following the examples in front of them, by 1760 every British colony in North America has a legislature of some kind • However, the legislatures still clashed with colonial governors appointed by the King (why?)

Freedom of the Press: • Colonists also expected to enjoy traditional rights of English subjects • Once such right, freedom of the press (?) was established by a court case in 1735 in New York • The Zenger case of libel established the important ideal that democracy depends on a well-informed public • Therefore, the press (?) has a right and responsibility to keep the public informed on truths • How do we view this right today?

Regulating Trade: • Under mercantilism (?) colonies existed to serve the economic needs of their parent country ( in what ways?) • In 1651, Parliament passed a series of Navigation Acts • By these laws: • 1. Shipments from Europe to England colonies had to go through England first or the mother port

  12. Regulating Trade: • 2. Any imports to England from the colonies had to come in ships built and owned by the British • 3. The colonies could sell key products (?) ONLY to England • Would these acts be beneficial or detrimental to the colonies?
