Art The Aesthetic Experience
The Aesthetic Experience • Aesthetic experience has to do with enjoying something for its own sake. • Human intention is a necessary factor in determining whether or not something is art.
Who judges art? • Artists • Art dealers • Collectors • Art critics • Museum directors • Art teachers
Art Criticism • It is a systematic discussion of an artwork involving • Description • Analysis • Interpretation • Evaluation
GOOD CRITICISM ALSO EDUCATES • It can point out things to look for in an artwork that we might overlook
Philosophy of Art • Involves asking and answering all kinds of questions • Philosophers of art want to know how are can be evaluated, how people respond to it and how art relates to our lives and our societies
Elements of Art • These are the tools that artists use to make their art • Not tools in a literal sense but – color, line, value…etc.
Elements • Line • Value • Shape • Texture • Color • Space
Line • Line is the path of a dot through space.
Value • Value in artwork is the range of light and dark.
Shape • Shape is a two-dimensional area with a recognizable boundary.
Texture • Texture is how things feel, or look as though they might feel if touched.
Color • Color is what the eye sees when light is reflected off an object
Space • Space is the distance or the area between, around, above, below, and within things.
Principles of Design • These are the rules that artists follow – they can look at these aspects in a piece of art to evaluate it. • For example – Emphasis, Balance, Proportion….etc.
Principles of Design • Balance • Variety • Emphasis • Rhythm • Movement • Unity • Proportion
Balance • Balance is the principle of art concerned with arranging the elements so that no one part of the work overpowers or seems heavier.
Variety • Variety combines one or more elements of art to create interest.
Emphasis • Emphasis is when an element in an artwork appears to be more important or attracts the most attention.
Rhythm • Rhythm indicates movement through the repetition of elements.
Movement • Movement leads the viewer to sense action in a work.
Unity • Unity is the arrangement of elements and principles of art to create a feeling of completeness and wholeness (like everything goes together).
Proportion • Proportion is how parts of a work relate to each other and to the whole.
Art Criticism Art Criticism is a systematic discussion of an artwork involving, usually four stages: • DESCRIPTION • ANALYSIS • INTERPRETATION • EVALUATION
DESCRIPTION • State the facts • Leave out opinion • State what you actually see
ANALYSIS • Point to relationships among things • Are they balanced? Is there variety? • Relating to the Principles of Design
INTERPRETATION • Explain the meaning of it • What is it content? • What is it expressing? • This is the creative part of criticism.
EVALUATION • To determine the quality or lasting importance of a work • Personal Judgment OR • Using the elements and principles of design to evaluate the work
