Enterprise Green Communities Results Enterprise Green Communities sought to: Create 8,500 smarter, healthier homes Invest $555 million in equity, loans and grants Provide expert training and technical assistance Inspire greener local, state and federal policies We not only met our goals, but exceeded them ahead of schedule by: Creating 14,500 smarter, healthier homes Investing $655 million in equity, loans and grants Training 4,000 housing professionals nationwide Advancing 20 new or stronger green building laws that were adopted by Congress, states and localities

Role of Enterprise Support local and state governments on use of the Green Communities Criteria Provide technical assistance and training to public agencies Deliver training to area developers Lead evaluation efforts regarding costs and benefits of meeting Criteria Assist government agencies in identifying new resources and partners

Evaluation Findings In 2009, Enterprise released report evaluating cost effectiveness of the Green Communities Criteria, Incremental Cost, Measurable Savings • Estimated lifetime savings exceed the initial investment of incorporating Green Communities Criteria into affordable housing • Direct savings come from energy and water conservation measures

  10. Key Findings • Average cost per unit to meet Energy and Water Criteria = $1,917 • Energy and water efficiency measures paid for themselves as well as produced $2,900 in projected per-unit lifetime savings.

Green Communities & Public Policy • Green Communities Criteria have been adopted: • USDA in the NOFA for the new construction funds in 2010 for the 515 program have GC as one criteria • More than 20 states and cities have adopted GC: • Cleveland • Denver • Iowa • Miami • Minnesota • New York City • San Francisco • Washington, DC • Washington State

  12. Enterprise Green Retrofit Pilots An innovative effort to improve energy and water efficiency in older affordable multifamily buildings by providing technical support, energy funding, utility rebate and incentive resources and debt to accomplish green retrofit projects.

Goals of the Pilot To create a replicable and scalable approach to funding energy efficiency and water conservation upgrades in affordable multifamily housing, while…. • Improving property cash flow • Dovetail with larger scale rehab efforts • Linking to green jobs programs • Improving health of buildings and residents

Pilot Characteristics Grants for energy audits and technical assistance Enterprise dollars leverages other soft dollars used as “first loss” Targets older properties Loan size determined on property’s ability to support 1.15-1.25x debt service coverage Currently operating in Pacific Northwest, San Francisco, Ohio, Boston-area partner

Enterprise Tools for Greening Affordable Housing ENTERPRISE CHARRETTE GRANTS $5000 Green Communities Charrette - an intense working session that will bring together a diverse group of housing development professionals as well as funders, policymakers and community stakeholders where possible to integrate sustainable green design principles into affordable housing developments. By supporting charrettes at the schematic design phase, Enterprise aims to help developers establish green goals as early as possible so that the most cost-effective green strategies can be incorporated in the building and site plans through the establishment of a Green Development Plan. http://www.greencommunitiesonline.org/tools/funding/grants/charrette.asp

Enterprise Tools for Greening Affordable Housing ENTERPRISE SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING GRANTS $5000 Up to $5,000 for affordable housing developers to maximize the health, economic and environmental benefits of green development throughout the project’s life cycle.
