  1. Call out system

  2. Old call-out system Rescue page TEAM casualty Police TL/DTL Worked OK Resulted in a number of false callouts (particularly searches or wrong team)

  3. New call-out system Police TL/DTL (Nick O, Phil, Roger) Rescue page Discuss TEAM casualty

  4. First page from TL/DTL group • Nick O, Phil T and Roger • Brian and Ashley (stand-by when one or more of above are unavailable) Page message ‘Rescue Crinkle Crags, first to base phone Nick O’ (or whoever puts out message) DO NOT PHONE THE POLICE (unless told)

  5. Team is paged • Rescue page • First person to base phones TL/DTL group • Collects information • ……normal call out procedure • Rescue page with full info • Mobile 1 away • Rest make their way to RV New system adds about 2 mins to a rescue

  6. New call-out system (search) Police TL/DTL (Nick O, Phil, Roger) Discuss… We may meet at base To discuss options and organise search TEAM Rescue page casualty

  7. Organisation • Tl and/or DTL will stay in radio room for a search + 1 other for the duration of the search • They will deploy people in groups onto the hill • They will run the search (radio room does not run a normal rescue) • Do not congregate in radio room or admin room • Early stages of a search can be busy in radio room

  8. Searching…..page says ‘search….’ • Come to base • Let those in radio room know you are here • Get your kit ready • Know what the hill conditions are • we can get weather updates • If you are ill …don’t go (other jobs are needed; ring in) • If you feel ill on the hill….come back (accompanied)

  9. Kit…. • Depends on weather…expect the worse • Winter kit (provided) • Summer kit (provided) • Trainees….make sure you have your own • Team torch…if available • Personal head torch (batteries!!)

  10. Kit…. • Radio (GPS radio or normal) • Food/drink? • Be prepared to be out for a long time • If you can’t… let us know…..there are places you can go • Map, compass, GPS (batteries) • Mobile phone • SEARCH SACK (split/or in one bag) • Casualty name (can be obtained any time…prefer no names over radio)

  11. On the hill…. • You will be organised in groups (2+) • Groups…mixed experience (if unhappy say so!) • Each group will have a task (search area) • Once completed, you will be given another or told to return • Each group, one radio and one point of contact (turn off other radios……saves battery…also impt if GPS radio • You might think some requests are strange but hopefully base a the big picture

  12. If you find someone…… • Check that they are the correct people!!!!!! • Relay position • Base will contact all hill parties • Assess casualty (usually need to be warmed..bivi shelter…hot drink??) • Ask for more help if needed • If mobile…walk casualty down…stay with them…usually slow

  13. Use of SARDA dogs…… • Called in by TL/DTL • Unless a team dog …it make take up to an hour to get to Ambleside • SARDA DO NOT ORGANISE SEARCHES • SARDA report to the team organising search or a local base if open (big searches) • SARDA dog/handler may accompany your group • Mostly SARDA work their own area (handler/navigator) • If a number of dogs are put in an area we will let them organise that area

  14. Use of SARDA dogs…… • Dog handler doesn’t have to be at the front…the dog will always seek them out • A dog can work where you have walked • Even if your are in front….handler can direct the dog • If it finds you it may bark (handler will praise it and move on) • Dog may need short rest every few hours • SARDA dogs wake happy campers!!!!!!!! • Does matter who finds…dog or team member

  15. End of search…… • Let base know if you are back or going home directly • Need casualty details • Go home…….dry kit!
