  2. What is a Power Standard? • Defined- • Power standards refer to those standards and indicators (benchmarks) that are critical for student’s success. • We are all responsible for being a part of the team, it cannot be shipped off to the curriculum department. We never disregard our colleagues.

Criteria for Identifying Power Standards Endurance • What is the value beyond the current year? • What is the value beyond this year’s test? • How far into a student’s academic and professional life will this reach? Leverage • Will proficiency be valuable in multiple areas? • How helpful is proficiency I this skill to other disciplines? Readiness for next level of learning • Will this provide essential knowledge or skills needed to insure success in the next level of learning (or grade level)? • What do the next year’s teachers expect students to know to be successful in the next grade level?

  6. Things to Consider School • How will it help them in school, this year and beyond? Life • How much of an impact would NOT knowing it be on life skills? MEAP/MME/ACT • How important is it to the state test? How is it tested? Is it core or extended core? What percentage of the test is dependent on knowing this?

  7. Myths and Facts • GLCE’s are the power standards • MYTH • GLCE’s are NOT the power standards. Power standards are developed from the GLCE’s • FACT • Power standards will make us all clones • MYTH • Power standards are the what not the how • FACT

The Process • ELA grade level reps are trained in the process of developing power standards • Grade level reps will bring training back and will utilize the process to develop Power Standards at each building • ELA grade level reps will share vertical comparisons/commonalities to develop district Power Standards • Building level teams will review both at grade level and vertically • Final District Power Standards are adopted
