  1. The Gospel According to Mark part 17“Who do you say that I am?”Mark 8:22-38

  2. Note that Jesus healed the man in two stages, not with His customary: Immediately healing the person. In stage one: The man could see but not clearly. He could see the men, but they looked like trees walking. Similarly, the disciples could see with their eyes yet their spiritual vision was unclear.

  3. The second stage: Jesus fullyrestored the mans vision and he saw everything clearly. Jesus was sending the disciples a message: Now you are beginning to see, but as yet it is still unclear. But, when I am finished you’ll have perfect vision, perfect perception.

  4. In Jesus day this was an area known for their belief in many gods. The people would carve these god images into the rock faces of the surrounding area. Jesus most likely planned to come to this precise place, to ask this precise question; precipitated by their lack of spiritual clarity.

  5. The one glaring omission, is the title: Messiah In context, Jesus was pointing out the blindness of the people, they could see all the miracles for themselves, they could read the Old Testament scriptures; which He was fulfilling to a tee.

  6. The question is designed to solicit a response which is in contrast to the one given by those who are blind. Matt 16:16) “Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

  7. Matt 16:17) “Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is heaven.” This is really Jesus summation to His lesson. Clarity of vision comes from God, there is no clarity apart from Christ.

  8. Before, they may have only conjectured about who He was, they may have said “we think we know who He is.” But now, they were absolutely clear about who He was, and they may have felt inclined to spread the news.

  9. The word “openly” is “Parrhesia” which means plainly or withoutconcealment.

  10. What a lesson for us, as we begin to discern the things of God, we must remain humble, with no pride or arrogance, because what we think we know may not be a truepicture, but merely a vision of trees walking.

  11. We may say, “Well I don’t want to lose my soul, so what do I do?” The answer was described back in verse 34 ) “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

  12. According to Jesus own words, anything less than denying ourselves, our own goals and ambitions, and following Christ is to embrace an eternal life in Hell.

  13. Jesus views our unwillingness to fully submit and take up our cross as being, “ashamed.” With so much at stake, why do we play a game of spiritual Russian roulette with God?

  14. The reason we continue in our sins, is because we lack spiritual sight and hearing. And in that foolish state, we are ashamed of God and His Word, making us an enemy of the divine kingdom.

  15. “Who do you say that I am?”
