Background & aimsThis is going to be difficult…….! • Top level project schedule will only be amended and agreed at Collaboration meetings: • Schedule information is gathered from WP Managers at Technical Board and from others during the CM week • Then summarised at end of week, ie, now…. • Response has been generally good, enough to get going • Not sure the best way to go about it; this is a try-out – lively discussion for certain • Will cover the elements in sequence, Muon beamline first • The emphasis is on practicality and realism – I will not be pressured to promise impossible to achieve dates

  4. 2.1: MICE Muon Beam: Target (KL): Today Note, UK FY Milestone plan for resumption of On-line-offline plan required • Planning for: • May/June: next extended test with: • New stator, dust catcher, clean environment • Test will be with stage 1 controller upgrade • Plan to migrate controller upgrade to MLCR June • Plan to complete controls upgrade project by end Dec10

  5. 2.1: MMB: diffuser This is the important date This date depends on Spectrometer solenoid Decay solenoid presently under repair – this is a worry But some news this week…….see later But the Muon beamline is not critical path for Step I completion Before ISIS moderator change – the ‘long shutdown’, starting August 2010

Decay solenoid news • Latest news from Matt Hills, working with Linde: • Matthias has been in contact with the engineers in Switzerland and their current thought is that there is a leak on the compressor shaft seal. We discussed a couple of options: • 1. Matthias is confident that, provided we clean the system further tomorrow, we could run the coldbox at relatively low risk because the coldbox 80K adsorber can handle the 2-3ppm/hour impurity rise. The blockage might reoccur, but if not, we may be able to carry on cooling the magnet. In this case, Linde would still like to arrange a further visit (probably from local agents HPC) to change the compressor shaft seal whilst the magnet is cold. This would interrupt things for 2-3 days. • 2. We keep the plant shut down until HPC have the parts and an engineer available to change the shaft seal. Linde are working to see how quickly this could be done at the moment, but my guess is it would be after Easter. Assuming this was successful, we would then be looking at having the magnet available again mid to late April. But compressor was Leak-tight…….odd? • Consensus that we do not do option One • Just be back where we began – might have blockage • Option two is right thing to do • Expert cover not available during Easter week

Spectrometer solenoid(s) • This is easily the most important contributor to this year: • Presently magnet #2 is still cold, but with one coil open circuit after powering & training • Useful thermal balance data being gathered • Investigation soon will show if joint can be repaired thro’ access plate • If not, will have to withdraw cold mass • In that case revert to magnet #1 • Solenoid Review Committee will re-convene at April-May decision point • Will only start to discuss realistic dates after that point

Spectrometer solenoid • Also required for Step II: • Need to complete definition of the joint LBL/DL solenoid controls project • Fruitful visit to LBL/Wang, a few points need clearing up • Ian Mullacrane/John Webb have list of jobs that need owners • ‘Green light’ for physical work to start will be when magnet arrives at FNAL • Will be phased to coincide with delivery to RAL

Trackers • Both trackers are ready • They are residing in Lab 7, R1 at RAL • But there’s a leak on one of the readout cryostats • Thought to be caused by cold weather over Christmas • Repair is planned – not thought to be a problem for any likely Step II schedule • Virostek plate & Rad shutters • Virostek plate supports probably need to be remade • Rad shutter doors and rails are made, awaiting fit check • Design work on actuating mechanism complete 30th April • Note although rad shutters not required till Step V, need to be assembled at Step II while access OK • None of the above a problem for Step II

RFCC & AFC • RFCC: • RF cavity project and associated hardware going very smoothly and is well on schedule • Coupling Coil contract has been signed, on schedule as promised • Detailed schedule is awaited from contractor • Discussions can start then – CM27, or maybe before…..? • AFC: • Absorber #1 is effectively ready, some changes to feedthro’ required • Focus coil module ready December, 2010, some slippage, mainly due to absorber/coil module interface

Infrastructure/integration – T.Hayler • Essentially ready in R5.2 for Step II and mostly for Step III: • Air system done - done • CCR water cooling plant & services – done • Rolling platform – installed and tested • Floor restraint beams – made and trial assembled • CCR compressor stands - made and positioned • All electrical work possible up to arrival of solenoid is done • PPS hardware – November, 2010 (deliberately delayed due to funding/staff constraints) • TOF shielding cage – at RAL, thinking about trial assembly • Step III floor plates - made and trial fitted • …..But, still no clear idea of 2MVA substation upgrade plans • Technical options are understood, but no financial approval by STFC – circular discussion getting nowhere….! • Puts Step IV at risk

Note about Step II integration • Important as it directly influences Step II readiness • A sequence of necessarily in-series operations • That must start after the solenoid delivery • Carefully planned by Tim Hayler, Geoff Barber, John Cobb • Have never done any of it before • Several very fragile parts and assemblies • Eg, trackers & readouts • Diffuser and controls • It will take about four months and is not open to discussion/negotiation • But Step III integration plan might be reviewed in light of experience with Step II

  15. Note about the EMR • Construction going well at UNIGE • Magnetic shielding issues being understood and resolved • Interface with R5.2 infrastructure and KL stand need work • Milestone plan for EMR delivery now required for delivery to Step III

Summary of important dates • Muon beamline: • Unlikely to hold up Step I completion before long shutdown • Infrastructure: • Ready for Step II now, small amount of work for Step III (bolting down and testing rolling platforms) • Spectrometer solenoid(s): • Plan beginning to form this week – will only start to discuss likely schedule outcomes after Review Committee, around May • AFC: • Ready December 2010 • RFCC: • Good news that CC contract is signed, detailed schedule awaited from contractor • RF cavity project highly unlikely to be a hold-up

  17. Project risks • Critically dependent on one delivery date this year – spectrometer solenoid • Delays to Steps II & III - obvious concern for overall project • 2MVA substation upgrade puts Step IV at risk and maybe Step III – must not underestimate seriousness • UK project will have a problem occupying its ‘standing army’ after about mid-May • Must make best use of installation, fitting, and rigging effort: • Presently geared to installation of Steps II and III on present baseline • Essential to re-direct to advance critical items; e.g. liquid hydrogen delivery system • Critical for project that established and effective team is not taken apart again • AN, for one, will not do this!
