3. Graffiti Hip-hop started in the 1970s when a gang truce that included many of New York’s adolescents was in place. A local D-jay, AfrikaBambaattaa came up with the idea of repositioning adolescents’ anger away from gang disputes and into music, dance, and graffiti (Nelson, 2004, p. 45). The result was the emergence in neighborhoods of Harlem and the Bronx of groups such as the Rock Steady Crew, Bronx City Bombers, and Zulu Nation.
