When she suggests some titles for her to check out at the State Street Library, Aibileen quietly reminds her, “You know colored folks ain’t allowed in that library.” In your book, read from the quote above on p. 179 (paperback) or p. 154 (hardback) to where this conversation takes place: “These is white rules. I don’t know which ones you following and which ones you ain’t.” We look at each other a second. “I’m tired of the rules,” I say. Aibileen chuckles and looks out the window. I realize how thin this revelation must sound to her. Answer this question in your journal: Why does Skeeter make that last statement? What is ironic about her saying she’s “tired of the rules”?
