World Data Centres • Arose out of the needs of IGY 50yrs ago • Geophysical, solar and environmental data • >40 designated WDCs of very different capacities • USA, Russia, Europe, Asia (India and Japan), China • →Need to plan for an up-dated system, that is more universal and takes advantage of ICTs IPY Data Managemnt Workshop, Cambridge, 3-4 March,2006

  7. A new paradigm • An international, interdisciplinary initiative: • Develop a long-term strategic Framework • Create an international Scientific Data and Information Forum (SciDIF) • A new ad hoc strategic committee to make it happen IPY Data Managemnt Workshop, Cambridge, 3-4 March,2006

  8. An ad hoc strategic committee • To oversee the development and implementation of an international framework and forum. • To develop strategies to address the policy, institutional, and long term funding issues • To assess the strategies and ensure the coordination of activities of existing ICSU bodies; • To establish the necessary partnerships with other key stakeholders in the public and private sector • To define any longer-term ‘operational’ needs and develop plans to address them as necessary • To coordinate these developments with the requirements of the scientific user communities IPY Data Managemnt Workshop, Cambridge, 3-4 March,2006

  11. FAGS • Founded in 1956, re IGY • Astronomical and Geophysical data analysis Services • 12 permanent data services mainly linked to relevant unions • Very different, e.g. Glacier monitoring service, space environment service • Based in USA, Europe, Japan • →Need to incorporate into a new more inclusive system IPY Data Managemnt Workshop, Cambridge, 3-4 March,2006
