PAGEANT OVERVIEW • Southern Glamouremphasizes natural beauty • “We judge primarily on facial beauty and personality” • All natural=no fake hair, lashes, light make-up (only enough to keep them from looking washed out on stage), etc.; tans are allowed • Sunday Best/Pageant Dress, sometimes casual/swimwear • Toddlers and Tiaras • Different pageants all across the country • Allowed to wear make-up, false lashes, spray tans, fake hair/teeth, etc. • Judged on beauty, personality, and costumes

  3. Benefits Confidence – healthy level of self esteem Social skills – learn how to make new friends and effectively communicate with peers and adults Good Sportsmanship – not everyone will go home with a trophy; everyone fails but it’s important to learn how to get back up Prizes – shouldn’t be the sole reason for participation, but are still considered benefits Enjoyment – some participants consider competing in pageants to be their hobby

Disadvantages May not be fully engaged or willing to participate, however, parents encourage to anyways Can be emotionally exhausting More prone to developing issues with body image (can be as severe as eating disorders and an unhealthy image of self) Displaying a mature look may attract unwanted attention

  5. Toddlers and Tiaras Heavily “done- up” Large emphasis on winning Intense parental influence Exceed minimum requirements of make up (nail and tanning appointments, fake hair and teeth, revealing costumes)
