  17. So, I still don’t get it, why use Edmodo? Students must learn to distinguish the skill needed to locate information online from the ability to understand that information. They are not hardwired to know how to best use digital media and social platforms. Educators must familiarize students with these emerging technologies and teach them how to use them productively and wisely.

  18. Teach digital safety *See Common Sense Media through Edmodo for more lessons and tips!

  19. Edmodo encourages students to learn about appropriate technology use by: • Following and contributing to a threaded conversation, rather than firing off comments into the great abyss; • Considering audience when choosing a group with which to share a given message, link, or video; • tagging comments for friends to find; and • using a filter to sort through collected postings to find what was needed.

  20. Socially, students are also learning to: • think before posting, and edit remarks when peers disapproved; • refrain from certain conventions and language which, while acceptable with friends outside of the school setting, are considered inappropriate in school; • select hyperlinks and videos which would be enjoyable and appropriate for everyone in the group; and • disagree with ideas without attacking the students who posted them.

  21. Educators gain too! Using social networking and mobile technologies can blend face‐to‐face and virtual learning teams in order to extend the time and resources for teachers to support and learn from one another by joining and following personal learning communities.
