What is Smart & Skilled? • Smart and Skilled is a reform of the NSW • vocational education and training system. • It will give people the chance to gain the skills they • need to get a job and advance their careers. • Smart and Skilled is being implemented in 2015 with • an entitlement to government subsidised • training commencing from 1 January. Schools Smart & Skilled presentation.

  4. Who is eligible and what courses are available? Eligible individuals over 15 years of age will be able to choose government subsidised training (from NSW skills list) for select foundation courses and qualifications up to and including Certificate III from TAFE NSW or an approved private or community training organisation. People aged 15 years and over who have left school, do not have a Certificate IV or higher level qualification and who live or work in New South Wales will be eligible to access the above training under the entitlement. New Zealand citizens have been added to the list of eligible students for entitlement access. Schools Smart & Skilled presentation.

  6. How much will a Smart & Skilled funded course cost? Instead of an annual fee, students will pay a fee per qualification. Students who take a subsequent post-school qualification will pay a higher fee as they have already benefitted from training. Student loans similar to those offered to university students will be available for approved Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications (VET FEE-HELP). Schools Smart & Skilled presentation.

  9. What will happen to apprentices? Apprentices will continue to be able to choose an approved training provider as they currently do. Fees will be charged per qualification rather than on an annual basis which has been set at $2,000.00 per qualification. Schools Smart & Skilled presentation.

  10. How will disadvantaged learners be supported? Concessions and fee exemptions will continue for Aboriginal people, people with a disability and welfare recipients. Approved training organisations will receive additional funding for training of disadvantaged learners. Schools Smart & Skilled presentation.

  12. Will VET in School students be impacted? VET in Schools students will continue under existing funding arrangements. VET certificates completed by school students will not impact on their first post school entitlement. Schools Smart & Skilled presentation.
