Publishing Your Web Site • Publishing allows the site to be accessed on the World Wide Web • A published website will be viewed on more than one monitor size • “Uploading” means to post files to a web server • FTP is a common method of publishing to a web server • FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol

Publishing Your Site • Sites that have been saved and edited on a local disk are referred to as remote sites • Once a website is published, it needs attention on a regular basis—updating a site is ongoing and time-consuming • A website with spelling or grammar errors seems less credible and is a poor reflection of the developer—YOU! • The main function of a web host is to provide space on the WWW for a fee

  4. Things to Consider • A website should only be tested in one target browser • Firefox • Opera • Netscape • Internet Explorer • Broken links affect the navigation structure of the website • Every website image should have Alt text

  5. Download Time • This is the time it takes to load the web page document into a user’s browser • You can see this time in Dreamweaver on the bottom right side of your screen

  6. Download Time • Things that affect download time: • Size of images—The larger the image, the longer it takes the page to load. You can compress an image using PaintShopPro • Types of scripts that you choose to run • Dynamic drive has MANY scripts, but always take the time to check the number of seconds a page takes to download • You should aim for 30 seconds or less for a download time

  7. Weight of a Page on the Web • The weight of the page is the web page document’s estimated download time and the file size

  8. Font Size and Color Combinations • The best size for a font on the WWW is 14 points • The best color combination is BLACK TEXT ON A WHITE BACKGROUND

  9. Document Links—The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! • Document-relative hyperlink to a web page document that no longer exists is called a BROKEN LINK • Broken links affect the navigation structureof the website • A page that has no links to it in the entire site is called anORPHANED LINK

  10. Alignment • Left, center, right, and justified text should be used appropriately when creating a web site Left Centered Right Justified
