Objectives • Become familiar with applicable regulatory standards and NYMC practices • Demonstrate an understanding of potential hazards and appropriate responses • Demonstrate an understanding of NYMC specific procedures
Introduction • People need safe and efficient means of exit in an emergency • It is important to know the location of at least 2 exits • Potential hazards must be recognized and correct responses understood • Knowing what to do before an emergency can save lives and prevent injury • Knowledge of site specific procedures is required
Applicable Standards and Procedures • Regulatory • OSHA 29 CFR 1910 General Industry, Subpart E • NFPA 101-1970, Life Safety Code • Local Building Codes • Site Specific Procedures • May be defined by site owner • Applicable to NYMC employees, faculty, students, visitors, and contractors
Exit Routes • Fundamental Requirements • Safe building design with sufficient exits • Unobstructed exit routes maintained • Exits clearly visible or route kept posted • Emergency escape route posted
Exit Routes • Components to a safe exit • Exit Access • Exit • Exit Discharge • Designated Assembly Area
Exit Access Way by which a person reaches the exit • Aisles and Corridors • All aisles and corridors must be kept clear - a minimum of 28 inches width is required • Stairwells • Stairwells must be kept clear, nothing can be stored in a stairwell Minimum 28 inches
Exit • Separated from other spaces of a building or structure • Exterior door • Fire safe interior structure • Protected stairwell
Exit Discharge • When exiting the building employees should be careful not to encounter further hazards • Exit discharge areas must be kept clear of snow, dirt, and other debris • If you notice an exit area not clear contact security at x4226
Assembly Area • It is important that all employees report to the assembly area • If you do not report, people will enter the building to look for you risking their lives • Do not go to your car or another building without first reporting that you evacuated the building safely

Fire Prevention and Evacuation • Control accumulation of flammable and combustible materials • Eliminate or control sources of ignition • Unplug equipment and appliances that are not in use • Report all fire incidents • NYMC employees are not trained or authorized to use fire extinguishers • Evacuate area and assemble at designated location
