  2. Conventions of our genre • The genre for our opening sequence is Horror • When considering this genre there are certain aspects which conventions fit into which need to be taken into consideration • Setting • Technical • Iconography • Narrative • Characterisation • Themes

  3. Setting • Settings conventional to horror films • Isolated places • Dark streets • Alleyways • Abandoned houses • Countryside • Woodlands • Built up areas • Underground tunnels • Graveyards

Technical • Typical camera shots used are low and high angle shots, used to connote fear or domination • Handheld camera shots make it difficult for the audience to see what’s happening connoting the feeling of the unknown • Ambient digetic sounds for example, car doors slamming, doors banging shut, footsteps create the sense of mystery

  5. Extreme Close ups are used to victimise, helping the audience identify fear and horror • A main convention of a horror film is to include jump cuts. This transmission between shots is used to startle the audience and most effective in doing so.

  6. Iconography • Visually: Dark colours, black connotes death and red connotes blood • Specific props include, knives, chainsaws, machetes, scalpels, any sort of weaponry, masks and religious icons • Lighting is very low key so that lots of shadows are made, creating a very eerie setting

Narrative Structure • Narrative structure is often dependent on institution. • Big conglomerate institutions usually have a positive new equilibrium • Independent companies don’t stick to the rule of having a new equilibrium as much, for example lots of independent horrors end on every character being killed • There is the decision whether to end on closure or leave room for a sequel • There is always a hero and a protagonist, a man or‘finalgirl of the film’
