  2. Conventions • Conventions is the sixth trait of the writing process. • It is the mechanical correctness of piece of writing.

  3. What makes a paper have good Conventions? • A paper that has correct Conventions could also be considered grammatically correct. • When on this step of the writing process you look for errors in: • Punctuation • Spelling • Capitalization • Grammar/ usage • Paragraphing (having even paragraphs)

  4. Punctuation • The external and internal punctuation is crucial. Internal punctuation includes things such as commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, semi-colons, and colons. External punctuation involves end marks like exclamation points, periods, and question marks. All of these kinds of punctuation needs to be correct.

  5. Capitalization • All capitalization rules should be applied. • One thing that you should capitalize is proper nouns, like somebody’s name. • Always capitalize the first word of a sentence and the pronoun I. • Titles, like Dr. and Mrs. Should be capitalized. • Give capital letters in the first part of a sentence that is being used as dialogue. • Ex. Julia said, “What’s for lunch?”

  6. Spelling • Spelling is one of the most common things make mistakes on in papers. • Most people depend on Spell Check. Spell Check is not trustworthy. Even though words are spelled correctly, they might be grammatically incorrect. • Always have at least two pier editors check for spelling errors. • Make sure to spell out numbers, and to never abbreviate, especially in formal writing.

  7. Paragraphing • When looking at paragraphs in a paper you might have noticed that each paragraph in the same size. This is good. This makes each paragraph looked unformed. It makes for a very neat paper. • Make sure each paragraph in the correct order. • The order of the paragraphs should be the same order as your points in your thesis statement. • Transition sentences are important in paragraphing. It kames the paragraphs flow smoothly.

  8. Activity • Directions: The paragraph below has several grammatical errors. Each student will go to the board and correct one error. When everyone has gone, all of the conventions will have been made. There are fifteen errors. I know too girls name Madeleine and julia. madeleine runs cross country and julia play volley ball?
