CULTURE CLUB! CREATING CULTURALLY COMPETENT KIDS Cultural competence: the level at which a person can successfully interact with people of differing backgrounds, creeds and cultures. The University at Berkeley defines cultural competence as: “A set of academic and interpersonal skills that allow individuals to increase their understanding and appreciation of cultural differences and similarities within, among and between groups. Culturally competent physicians are able to provide patient-centered care by adjusting their attitudes and behaviors to account for the impact of emotional, cultural, social and psychological issues on the main biomedical ailment (Hendrick).” BOUND FOR ALL POINTS OF THE COMPASS!

CREATING CULTURALLY COMPETENT KIDS The Nuts & Bolts • How to fit a Culture Club program into your schedule: • start with once a month • integrate it into an existing after school program • make a culture club portion of a program that you have that is already going well • How to select a country to visit: • Pick a significant holiday • Are there people in your patron group or community who are from other countries? • Are there people in your staff, or have you personally gone to other countries? Do you have items from other countries, photographs, brochures, maps, trinkets? • Layout of the Room BOUND FOR ALL POINTS OF THE COMPASS!

CREATING CULTURALLY COMPETENT KIDS The Nuts & Bolts • The Presentation • Tips: • - Avoid hot button issues • - Stick to heritage sites, ie: UNESCO; historically significant and • touristy areas • - Always end with a question and answer portion, espc when you have guest • speaker(s) • - Music, Food and Traditions • Using guest speakers: • always have a back up presentation or plan ready • guest speakers are much more effective in delivering the reality of other countries than any other source • they frequently tell their friends what they are doing, and invite them, too! • many are so flattered, they insist on bringing a traditional food dish, or some items from their country BOUND FOR ALL POINTS OF THE COMPASS!

CREATING CULTURALLY COMPETENT KIDS • FOOD! • Ask local restaurants to either donate or give a discount on food items in exchange for mentioning their name at the program/displaying their take out container(s) • Ask parents to donate food and or drink • Menu: • make it as complicated as your budget and time will allow or keep it simple • focus more on two or three food items, and supplement it with a basic beverage BOUND FOR ALL POINTS OF THE COMPASS!

CREATING CULTURALLY COMPETENT KIDS • After the presentation: • keep things relaxed and casual • play the longer videos, or music from the host country • repeat videos • music and videos continue even while they are doing the craft • Schmooze/hobnob with parents BOUND FOR ALL POINTS OF THE COMPASS!
